i was looking through some LPs this morning and i was forced to pause by the cover of Cheap Trick's In Color. It struck me after staring and then flipping to the b&w side and then back again, how much i fancy the package itself. it is something to behold. has this been the case for anyone else with other albums?

Well, my fascination at age 7 with "Houses of the Holy" and the Blind Faith album probably doesn't count. And neither does Judy Tzuke.

As far as intriguing packaging, Albini has always done some interesting things: that die-cut cover for the Rapeman album, the disgusting bodybag version of Big Black's "Headache" EP, the reel-to-reel box for the vinyl of "1000 Hurts", etc.

I remember really liking the cover of Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits, and eventually asking my grandmother to help me identify the old-time movie stars on the jacket and inner sleeve that I didn't recognize. Grandma was pretty cool, and got quite a kick out of the cover art.

Speaking of Cooper, has anyone read his autobiography? I heard him interviewed on NPR around the time it was released and have kept meaning to check it out, but have never gotten around to it.

He has an autobiography? I thought he'd just written a book about how much he loves golf.

Nah, that's his autobiography. He just named it ALICE COOPER: GOLF MONSTER as a joke.

Apparently he and Lloyd Cole have a good-natured feud about who is the best rock & roll golfer. Dunno if Iggy is involved. Didn't Iggy actually get his PGA card a while back?

Speaking of jokey titles, I recall reading that Sterling Morrison was writing a memoir of the VU (which, apparently, he didn't live to finish). He said he intended to call his book The Velvet Underground Diet. Why? Because diet books could be counted on to sell well.
