favorite bad song

Do you have a favorite bad song that you'll never forget? One has endeared itself to me as sincere, yet insulting with its tacky lyrics. It's Charlene's Never Been To Me. I call it the first self-help song, a very friendly offering to the inner child.

"Candy Man" by Sammy Davis Jr., which has been burrowed into my brainpan since the tender age of 10.

Billy Ocean - Love Really Hurts Without You.

Karaoke tip if you get forced - Yellow Submarine, very easy song to sing with little effort.

I find that song fascinating with its weird, 70s-hangover cocktail of both preening arrogance and confident self-doubt. I have to admit I listen to it on the rare occasions it shows up on the radio, just to try once again to untangle its twisted roots.

I think Michael is referring to the Charlene song, but I kind of like it as a description of Candy Man, too.

You are correct, sir, but I like your interpretation better.

i was at a karouke bar a few weeks ago and i sang as a goof never gonna let you go by the gastly rick astley whos claim to fame is being qouted in our king of pop nick lowe.
i did the song exaggerated and somewhat straight and got compliments from a woman saying she loved that song .
when i introoduced the song i stole the whole nick lowe dialogue about all men being lairs. i was kind of hoping that one person out of the 100 or so bar patrons would have called me on my plagarization/ too bad you guys werent around.

another favorite bad song although im not sure if its bad is the love boat theme song

And I thought I was the only one who still remembers the joy and pleasure of "All Men Are Liars" by the Old Basher. Also, "Good Morning Starshine" by Keith, which was from the musical Hair, has been a favorite of mine since I heard it on the radio back in '69 along with my favorite Beach Boys song of all time, "I Can Hear Music."

In reference to a previous thread:
"Laughter In The Rain" by Neil Sedaka

"Never Been To Me" has been ruined for me by countless bad karaoke versions. You haven't lived until some person you don't know chews you out from the stage for something he/she is pretending to be someone who should really be talking to him/herself. Yes, the gender split is necessary. Ever been to a Kamikaze karaoke night? Where you don't get to pick the songs you sing?

Sigh.
The guy who sings "Candy Man" in the Willy Wonka movie it originated from plays a Dalek commander in an Jon Pertwee Doctor Who story, so everytime I see the film, I think of him indoctrinating the kids around him to the wonders of the future Dalek empire. This eventually spread to Sammy Davis Jr., leading to some seriously weird conspiracy theories involving Ocean's 11, fueled by delicious sticky weed.

I've always liked "Don't Cry Out Loud" because the whole song seems like *really* bad advice that flies in the face of conventional (psychological) wisdom.

But the singer kind of knows that, so it adds an interesting layer.
Re: favorite bad song

One song I cringe from is Playground In My Mind. The kiddie chorus singing "My name is Michael, I've got a nickel" makes me want to line 'em up and slap 'em Stooges style. It's not my favorite. The last time I heard it was when my cousin put on his 70s hits cd and it popped up. The minute it came on, I groaned, and he said he loved the song. Whereupon I groaned again.

I guess I could answer the original question.

I still like "Baby Come Back" by Player. It wasn't until years later that I realized what a blatant Hall & Oates rip it is.

Come to that, I still like Hall & Oates.

Let the mocking begin.

Blender put out one of its lists a while back (50 Worst Songs Of All Time) and I took exception to #23 on that list; Sunglasses At Night.

I also didn't have the nerve to put Hart's Boy In The Box on the best second LPs list. But I wanted to.

Let the mocking continue.

Playground in My Mind! Is that the name of that song? That's one of those songs that I have to listen to every time I hear it, sort of like prodding a sore tooth with my tongue.

Another one is "Good Morning, Starshine," a song that horrifies me but I have to listen to it anyway. It's pretty fascinating, actually - it's got the whole hippie love-the-world vibe, some terrible nonsense lyrics, but a weird undertow to it that kind of makes it a junior "Some Velvet Morning,"
Re: favorite bad song

Good Morning Starshine sounds like a grandfather trying to hang out with his grandson's hippie friends, so he wrote some psychedelic gibberish to impress them. Zooby dooby gooby bing bang a booey...call the narcs!

Well, the best Sunglasses at Night is Gonn's Blackout of Gretely"!

Sun City - Artists United Against Apartheid

It was for a good cause, and I think the album has some legitimately great stuff, but the title track is so over the top (John Oates, Lou Reed & Ruben Blades?), it's hilarious. I remember picking this up the day it came out in 1985, listening to it and thinking, "gee, this sounds kind of dated, doesn't it?"

"Lonely Boy" by Andrew Gold is one that I always crank up and sing along with in the car at top volume.

a truly awful song by I just can't help myself.

"The Pina Colada Song" is a close second...

I wonder if any California stations played Wildfire when those forest fires were blazin'. Heh!
Re: favorite bad song
March 29, 2008 09:20PM
As one who lives in San Diego, I can safely say "Uh, no."

Although that wouldn't have applied to the piped-in music...you probably could have walked into a Lowe's at the height of the blaze and heard it on Muzak. One local market chain (Henry's) probably had Arthur Brown's "Fire" playing on the tape loop during the blaze.

It's actually quite disconcerting...it seems that every store in San Diego is playing nothing but 60s/70s/80s music on infinite loop. It's like living in an endless episode of The Twilight Zone.

Don't knock Andrew Gold! Way back in 1999 when Dionne Warwick was fighting it out with Big Poo Generator for the #1 spot on MP3.com I found an Andrew Gold song called Teardrops which to this day is still one of my favorites.

Abba - Fernando

It's like candy coated heroin. Mainlining it can result in permanent brain damage.

According to the PDR it's the single leading cause of big, dopey smiles.

Last Kiss.

I don't know who did it originally, but Pearl Jam covered it, and it still stinks. Just when I think that all 50s golden oldies are gems, this song snaps me back to reality. It's about a car crash survivor whose girlfriend didn't make it, so he wants to be good so he can join her in heaven, "so I can see my baby when I leave this world." It tries so hard to be tragic, but it ends up as boring as a moldering cracker jack box.

Re: favorite bad song

Atlantis - by Donovan.

Donovan could be cool, but he also could be annoying in his hippy dippy way. I could mention Jennifer Juniper, but it doesn't hold a flower to this experimental spoken word hipster mess. See, this was back in the day when everything was a trip. I mean, you could read The Hardy Boys out loud with bongos in the background, and the acid heads in the audience would yell, "Far out, man." The video to this dreck is even more embarrassing.

It would be funny if sonic indulgences like this came back into vogue. We need a 10 minute epic song, like When The Music's Over, for the 00s.

Devandra Banhart hasn't done it already?
