Iggy's Ray of Light

Iggy's rendition of "Ray of Light" at the RRHOF induction was cool. But nowhere near as cool as the gripping five minute tracking shot of him walking through the kitchen. That was some classic tv there.

From what I hear, Iggy has quite a ray of light.

Aside from the kitchen thing, was there anything remotely as cringe-inducing as Michael Anthony & Sammy Hagar representing for Van Halen last year?

Just Lou Reed's embarrassing induction of Leonard Cohen - he obviously didn't prepare ahead of time, just went up and rambled incoherently for a couple of minutes, then started reading random Cohen lyrics. Madonna's speech was pretty bad, too - she would not shut up, and was "nervous" and reading directly from paper, but it's hard to know if she really was nervous or if she was just affecting a gracious & humble pose.

All the presenters were horrible. Don't these guys make enough to hire a speech writer instead of fumbling around with papers or index cards they put together from the "Book of Quotes" an hour before the show?

Timberlake at least knew how to use the teleprompter, but sheeeeeesh hitting on Madonna like that. Dude has issues, get thee to a therapist. Apparently he never recovered from Madge/Britneee tongue sandwich.

Iggy was good, Watt looked pained.

I liked Iggy introducing the Stooges to Madge. That was classic.

Timberlake was at least (mostly) entertaining, as were parts of Billy Joel's induction of the Coug. Haven't watched Tom Hanks' DC5 induction yet, as I got a sudden overwhelming urge to watch something else. So I'll watch that on tivo tonite.

Gotta say, though, the Coug definitely is married to a cougar. That woman looks better now than she did 20 years ago.

Iggy needs to start thinking of how to get his own music over on these kind of events so he can get in the HOF too.

Jann Wenner's comments every year are always the most excrutiating part. When he speaks I want to rip my face off and douse my self with gasoline.

Madonna is someone I've always respected on some levels yet she's remained an artist whose music I've never had much of a desire to actually listen to more than merely keeping a particular song of her's on the radio or TV that I like (save a song here and there floating around on my iPod somewhere). But anyone with her clout that helps bring exposure and respect to someone like Iggy is admirable and is to be commended which is far more than I can say for the institution that inducted her.

It's common knowledge that Madonna is nearly as famous for her media savvy as she is for her music and her choosing Iggy & The Stooges to perform her songs at the ceremony only exemplifies this. Instead of choosing some well-known pop artist to perform her songs, which are among the most recognizable songs ever, she goes out and chooses an artist to perform them who is the antithesis of pop music and the epitome of underground rock & roll. Is she really a fan, a kindred spirit from Michigan, a master manipulator or is there just a mutual respect between these artists from entirely different music worlds?

Whatever the case, I imagine she drew the attention and piqued the interest of some Iggy & The Stooges fans that saw the broadcast like myself who may have never really explored her body of work on any serious level. I've begun to do that and while nothing may come of it beyond those few songs on my iPod, she's at least gotten someone who just finished playing that third Young Gods album to listen to her music a bit more closely.

I for one am still attracted to the older rocking (chair) person(s).

The lot of you are far too critical.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't even like ELP and Yes, but the fact that they aren't in the damn hall, and I dunno if they've ever even been nominated, is a crock. Sure, prog ain't cool these days, but those were important bands in the history of rock, and they deserve recognition. Even if they were crap. Which they weren't entirely. Just mostly.

And of course, important post-punk bands like Joy Division/New Order will never be recognized, nor will the B-52s and Devo, as they are considered lightweight "New Wave" bands and Rolling Stone declared that unimportant.

Ah, screw it. My shingles are acting up again so I'm drunk on Jameson. I won't remember posting this in the morning.

If you have ever have the opportunity to get shingles, decline it. They fucking suck. Chicken pox with the added bonus of nerve pain. Fucking agony. About as much damn fun as the stinking kidney stones. And now I'm watching the damn BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA when I should be watching JOHN ADAMS. What is this world coming to, I ask?

Oh well, at least Jamesons is Irish, so St. Patrick is happy. The Irish saved civilization, yknow. Thomas Cahill says so. And I'm part Irish, so thank me for civilization, mofos. And Jameson kicks Bushmill's ass. Bushmill's tastes like old socks have been marinating in it.

Damn Robert Patrick. Makes me cry every time I watch TERABITHIA and he says that girl ain't goin' to hell.

The shingles are mostly gone, but every so often they decide to flare up again. Damn things.

What irks me most about the R&R Hall Of Fame is each year I see several artists getting inducted from disparate music genres and time frames. A Soul/R&B act from the 60's, a mega-star hitmaker from the 80's, an influential folky, a classic Hard Rock/Metal band, an old Tin-Pan Alley artist, a heartland rocker. Whoever it may be, at least I could always rationalize that these artists got in before artists like The Stooges and Dolls (who I find infinitely more deserving) because they're from an entirely different category of music or because they sold a boatload of records or because they are just much more palatable to the general public. Fair enough, I'm a realist.

But the most disheartening thing was when the Pistols, Clash and even the Ramones from nearly the very same genre got inducted before the Dolls and Stooges. Now, I'm a fan of the Pistols, Clash and Ramones so no disrespect is intended here but in what world exactly would Mantle, Mays and Snider get inducted into a Hall Of Fame before Ruth and Gehrig? Not in any Hall Of Fame that has a clear understanding of the "influence and significance of an artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll," which is the supposed criteria and rule-of-thumb the R&R Hall Of Fame uses in its induction process. What the general public gets instead is an institution apparently bereft of the most elementary music knowledge not too dissimilar from that of a group of teenage girls knee-deep in Britney Spears CDs who are vaguely aware of who Tiffany and Debbie Gibson are.

I have to exclude the Sex Pistols as I've never cared much for them and I think they're more a "right place, right time" thing (plus, it helps my argument):

The Clash and (especially) The Ramones were much more prolific than either The Stooges or The Dolls.

The Rock & Roll HOF has always been a funny idea to me.

Was that a spring training game since the season dosen't start that early (at least not yet), or did you see them play on Patriot's Day, a MA holiday in mid-April?

I never thought there should be a rock n roll hall of fame in the first place. After all, isn't that what record stores are for? I've said this before: there's nothing like going into a record store, listening to the latest music, seeing the grooviest posters on the walls, and browsing through the selections. That's an hour of enjoyment right there, and it's free.

While I've never been to the RnR Hall of Fame, I hear its pretty overrated. Even if it wasn't, I'm not going there anytime soon. I could never get used to the idea of combining life-affirming music with a dusty, historical relic warehouse.
