Record Store for sale
April 08, 2005 12:16AM
I saw one today in the small and relaxed town of Sebring, Fl. I think I'm going to buy it! Then, i'll make cassette tapes of punk, hip hop and independent "standards", pass them out to the many elderly residents that alrady live there and passers by that visit the area. Thereby, simultaneously introducing them to many decades worth of art they have never knew existed and because they were too busy digging themselves out of the snow for the past forty years. Also, I'd be giving them a renewed sense of hipness. Then, once they know the tunes and can hum along, i'll form a local band and play them live to various assisted living facilities. I know, I know... GOLD! right? I'm off now to turn in my unemployment benefits card and sell the rest of my food stamps. "I'm gonna be rich!"

Don't forget to drop out of college, tune your irony to a crisp, stock the emo wares, put incense in the corner and for gods sakes get a couple cats!

My vote for store name goes to the name of a record store I frequented during my short stay in Cleveland. Upon arriving at that fair metropolis, I immediately looked up the names and addresses of all the record stores in the area. One listing was for "Records," which I assumed to be a misprint/oversight of some sort. However, when I finally made my way to the store, which was in a really crappy part of Cleveland (which, since Cleveland is crappy in general, was truly supercrappy), I noticed the large, inartfully handpainted sign above the door that said "RECORDS." The old guy who owned the place drank whiskey during the day, smoked cigars and played good old country records on his turntable. Nothing was organized, but it was all amazingly cheap (20 cents per single, no more than a few bucks per LP). Despite itself, Cleveland had great record stores.

the best--and as with any other town that had nothing going for it they--the stores--became melting pots for distaff kids looking to connect: that entire fertile period of pagans/ubu/mirrors/eels all worked at those stores, some on the west side, some on the east side, ready to defend their turf, honor, and music to the death.

like it should always be.

RIP cigars and C&W store owners.
