The Best of Sparks: Music That You Can Dance To
Re: funniest album titles
January 21, 2008 04:28PM
Oh, no kidding. I remember seeing the spine of the Sparks CD in the bin and grabbed it, ecstatic that I had a domestic best-of to listen to finally...

...and then being crestfallen when I realized it was just that Curb-label CD. Not that it's horrible, but it ain't a Best of by any stretch.

(Horrific aside. Remember that movie RAD!, the dirt-bike movie? There's a "dance" sequence in it where Bart Conner -- ex-Olympic great and Oklahoma local hero -- and the other evil bikers pick up the women in the crowd by "dancing" to the title track. I hope the Maels got a nice computer from the royalties.)

Rob Sheffield recently wrote that Céline Dion entitling her new CD Taking Chances is like Zac Efron calling his new CD Scaring Bikers, or Jay-Z using the title Bumming Bus Fare from My Mom.

Please explain the Mekons title. I mean, I get the reference to Shakespeare ("The quality of mercy is not strain'd, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven", The Merchant of Venice) but what's the weird spelling?

Funny/mean titles:

Fatima Mansions, Blues for Ceaucesu
Marilyn Manson, Antichrist Superstar
Re: funniest album titles

The Mekons – The Quality of Mercy is Not Strnen

I thought that was a great title, even though it was years before I understood it.

The Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album)

I was born in 1970, so I don't know how people reacted at the time. Nonetheless, I think it was pretty bold, with a bit of taking the piss.

Speaking of taking the piss, how about:
The Who - Who's Next

Others:
The Housemartins - London 0, Hull 4
Van Halen - OU812 (Not really funny, but at the time, I remember a friend of mine mocking up an ad in which one salesman looked at another salesman's DayTimer and said "OICU1/212?", which is absolutely genius in the world of copywriting...)
Steve Earle - I Feel Alright
Andrew WK - I Get Wet
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

I get it, about a "monkey"* trying to write Shakespeare... so it's that the monkey gets really close?

* I work with primatologists and know that chimps aren't monkeys
Re: funniest album titles

Even funnier is the back cover to the Mekons' album, which "accidentally" features a picture of Gang of Four (from the same batch that appears on the Peel Sessions CD), instead of The Mekons, who seem to be cursing the monkey for his failure.

Curse of the Mekons is also a very funny album title. As is Retreat From Memphis.

The Cramps "Rockin' and Reelin' in Aukland, New Zealand"

Joe Walsh gave one of his albums the nonsense title "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get." When the little kid on our street said, "What's that title mean?" we tortured him with:

"Don't you get it?! You know, the smoker...you drink...the player you get. Get it?"

"No..."

Michael Toland you've said a lot of witty things but the the Windbreakers had me gasping. Why didn't I ever make that association before?? Must need more fiber in my diet.

Re: funniest album titles

Well, in addition to the Windbreakers being a fairly funny name in its own right, I think Michael was making reference to the fact that they also released an album called Electric Landlady in 1991 or so. Not sure whose came first.
Re: funniest album titles
February 19, 2008 04:43PM
You are correct, sir. It's hard to tell which specific post is getting commented on. I should've quoted the Kirsty thing in my reply.

Funnily enough, I always associated the Windbreakers' name with the jacket, rather than flatulence. I didn't catch the double entendre until Spinal Tap put out the album Break Like the Wind. Then I looked at my Windbreakers records and thought "Ooohh...now I get it..."

As witty as you may think I am, bbluesman, I'm afraid I wasn't witty enough for a good reply to your post. I tried. Sorry.

And it appears that both Electric Landladys came out in 1991. Great minds think alike.
