Kiddie shows

Interesting (well, not really, I guess) article about new kid's shows aimed at hipsters:

I keep forgetting to watch YO GABBA GABBA, but can vouch for its host, Lance Robertson. A hellaciously good guy - was a reliable scenester in STL back in the late 80s/early 90s and worked in what was then one of the best used record stores in River City and was at every show worth going to. A truly charming cat, and I'm glad he's making some noise on Nickelodeon. The kids are alright!

I loved Kukla, Fran, and Ollie. It was on Saturday mornings, and they showed obscure, independent movies from around the world. Does anybody remember them?

Yes - The Children's Film Festival. I loved "Skinny & Fatty" from Japan - my brother tracked down a tape of it a few years back, which was cool.

There were some pretty heavy themes in those films.

I watched it, too, and loved it. The 70s really were an amazingly bizarre time in children's television (see anything by Sid and Marty Krofft; Captain Kangaroo; The Magic Garden; New Zoo Review; Electric Company; Zoom; old Warner Brothers cartoons from the 40s/50s with all their archaic pop culture references; the animated version of Star Trek; etc.). Programming by psychedelic hippie love children, really.
