Anyone else checked it out yet? I've got mixed feelings about it - I like it, but I can't help but feel like Merritt is selling his material short when he decides to record an entire album in a certain style, rather than just letting the songs dictate how they should sound. The fuzzed out Jesus & Mary Chain vibe suits some of the songs on DISTORTION just fine, but it doesn't seem to be the best fit for some of the others.
Maybe the "this shall be my _________ album" approach is the only way Merritt can keep himself interested these days, but I wish he'd step back and figure out what approach fits an individual song the best instead of shoehorning them in to whatever direction he's decided he wants his current album to be. I think a few songs on his last album got shortchanged by the all-acoustic approach, and I think several get swamped by the noise on this one.
