Re: Again, for the very 1st time.

Again, for the very 1st time.
November 16, 2007 01:20AM
Songs you wish you had never heard, just so you could hear them again for the very 1st time?

Songs that would have blown you away, but were overly familiar by the time you were old enough to appreciate them (e.g. Aretha's "Respect.")

Songs that you once loved, but would love to love again with the full force of youth (e.g. Stone Roses "I Am The Resurrection.")

Velvet's "Oh! Sweet Nothin'," Richard Thompson's "A Man In Need," Beatles "Don't Bother Me."

Surrender
Let's Go
Hanging on the Telephone
Cruel to Be Kind
Is She Really Going Out with Him?
Train in Vain
Message in a Bottle

Album I wish I could hear for the first time again, under the very same circumstances:

Hey, great romantic music is where you find it.

Really any iconic song that as been overplayed.
God Only Knows
You Can't always Get What You Want
Like A Rolling Stone
Hey Jude
etc

Also really simplistic music like most of the main Blues men (Waters, Hooker, etc) and Punk like the early Ramones.

All that stuff is amazing but I really can't squeeze too much out of it anymore. I do still get the greatness though.

who-won't get fooled again (age 10)
beatles-a day in the life (7)
Glam Rock on TV (early teens)
roxy music (15) then a dry spell until...
Cheap Trick (first concert)
Elvis Costello/Clash/Undertones/Jam/U2/Joy Division (79-81)
LONG dry spell...
Stone Roses '89(complete w/smiley faced shirts and X)
Television Personalities

Most Recently this happened...
the arctic monkeys

I haven't really listed to commercial radio since about 1977-78, so its kinda wierd if I hear someone like Steve Miller's 'big ol' jet airliner', I think to meself, eh not bad. But then I think again, they're must be people out there that have heard this song 10,000 times, jaysus h christ, they gotta be fucking sick of it by now.

Songs that no matter how many times I've heard them or how familiar they've become still punch me in the gut every time I hear them again:

Derek & the Dominoes - "Layla"
Joy Division - "Love Will Tear Us Apart," "Transmission," "Atmosphere"
Sex Pistols - "God Save the Queen" "Anarchy in the UK"
Beatles - "Here Comes the Sun," "Tomorrow Never Knows"
Rod Stewart - "Mandolin Wind," "You Wear It Well"
Velvet Underground - "Waiting for the Man," "Venus In Furs," "All Tomorrow's Parties," "Heroin," "European Son," "Sister Ray"
My Bloody Valentine - "When You Sleep"
Ride - "Vapour Trail"
Replacements - "Can't Hardly Wait," "Bastards of Young"
REM - "Star Me Kitten," "Nightswimming"
Kate Bush - "Wuthering Heights"
Tori Amos - "Silent All These Years"
U2 - "Out of Control"
The Clash - "Hitsville UK"
Neil Young - "Harvest Moon"

These are not necessarilly my favorite songs by these artists (although some are), but just the ones that still sound fresh and still provoke an emotional response no matter how often I've heard them. I've never gotten tired of hearing them and doubt I ever will.

Wow, a lot of duplication on my end, esp. Strawberry Fields and The Replacements. I guess my hopefully not-mentioned-already batch would be:

Senses Working Overtime -- XTC
Clair de Lune -- Debussey (sorry for the classics)
Try A Little Tenderness - Otis Redding
Bye Bye Pride -- Go-Betweens
Memphis, Egypt & Last Dance-- Mekons
Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace -- Cheap Trick
Dear Prudence -- The Beatles
Bolero -- Ravel
At Last -- Etta James
Billie Jean -- Michael Jackson
(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, And Understanding -- Elvis Costello

I live in Oklahoma, so the chances of hearing any of this stuff on the radio is less than you can imagine (except for the classics, which is KCSC all the way). No classic rock, since the radio does play that stuff so much, it's hard for me to want to hear it again -- even the greats like Layla and Led Zep. Complete ditto on hearing Purple Rain in its entirety again for the first time. One of the few perfect albums, in my opinion, and I remember hearing it for the first time after all the build up and realizing it was that good at the time.
