Favorite non-hit song

Quite often, a person's favorite song by a given artist will be one that's pretty familiar to most people — or at least, to most fans of that artist. What favorites do you have that, in your opinion, trump any better-known songs by that artist?

Nosepail's "favorite song in any genre" thread made me think of this one.

I think I mentioned this in a previous post, but one of my favorite Kinks songs is "Hot Potatoes" from the Everybody's In Show-Biz album.

This Whole World by The Beach Boys from Sunflower. Never fails to make me SMiLE.

"Slow Motion" and "Angels on the Balcony" by Blondie.

Dittos on "This Whole World". Another song from Sunflower I like is "All I Wanna Do"

I agree on "This Whole World" and "All I Wanna Do". Are these the only good songs that The Beach Boys released after the Sixties? (I might be too dismissive of Surfs Up....would require a re-evaluation here...)

No, the Beach Boys did have a few half-decent songs after the 60s, among them "Free Flows" & "Long Promised Road" from Surf's Up (worth a second look; just cheerfully ignore "Student Demonstration Time"), "Marcella" from Carl & the Passions/So Tough, "Funky Pretty" & "Sail On Sailor" from Holland and "Good Timin' " from 1979.

I forgot about Sail On Sailor and Marcella! Love those songs! Gonna iPod them right now!

The Sunflower/Surf's Up twofer has some of their best and worst songs ever. Apart from the ones mentioned ("Feel Flows" is Carl's masterpiece) I love Cool, Cool Water, 'Til I Die, Disney Girls (Bruce Johnson's best), Forever (Dennis' masterpiece).

Then there's the '77 outsider-music classic "Love You," really more of a Brian solo lp tho credited to the Boys. Utter wonderfulness that any Daniel Johnson or Jonathan Richman fan should dig.

Those are all really great tunes. It is hard to believe that those songs didn't become immensely popular. I guess it is for the better. I love that twofer - Even Add some Music (as cheesy as it is) is a great song. Today/ Summer Days is also an incredible twofer.

The Ronettes have a song Walking in the Rain which I had never heard that could possibly be as good as Be My Baby

I know I'm old and know tons of music trivia but I don't remember the details of every chart from 1962 off the top of my head, but wasn't "Walking In the Rain" an immense hit too? I always thought of it as one. If it wasn't it should have been because it's positively cinematic (in Spector-scope!).

I agree, 'Til I Die and Disney Girls, in fact all the songs you mentioned...

"Walking In the Rain" was a Top 40 hit back in '64, but I think it only went up to #24. I also heard somewhere that it earned Spector his only Grammy for Best Sound Effects.

I'm sure to Phil Spector in 1964 24 on the chart was a failure but I'd take it!

Today I am feeling partial towards Psychotic Pineapple's 'Headcheese'

Tomorrow that may change...

This is a good topic.

At one point, I thought my appreciation of The Psychedelic Furs' "Heaven" was unique. Not so much anymore.

U2's "Ultraviolet" may be my favorite tune in their catalog.

Others include:
"The Other End (of the Telescope)" - Til Tuesday/Elvis Costello
"This is What She's Like" - Dexys Midnight Runners;
"Big Brother Beat" - De La Soul feat. Mos Def;
"(I Want Your) Hands on Me" - Sinead O'Connor;
"Harvest Home" - Big Country;
"Ghetto Soundwave" - Fishbone;
"I Don't Mind if You Forget Me" - Morrissey;
and, of course, New Order's "Round & Round", the video of which freaks out viewers under 30, due to the hairstyles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kHgMvWmIs4)...
