Belgian Rock

a friend of mine just turned me on to a bunch of different Belgian "rock".

i'm really enjoying it! very refreshing stuff. most of it seems to be five or six years old but..... it's new to me.

i'd encourage anyone to check these out:

dEUS
Evil Superstars
Millionaire
Zita Swoon

i've got a dEUS cd from '96 produced by eric drew feldman called "in a bar, under the sea" that i recall as "quirky" but not particularly riveting. i'll go pull it out and give it a spin again, who knows?

i always thought minimal compact was belgian, but according to the entry here, they were israeli/french... any other belgian bands of note?

yeah, that album didn't do much for me.

i liked "My Sister = My Clock" much better.

Evil Superstars is my favorite out of all I mentioned.

at least so far they are...... I'm still wading through most of it.

i have a TON of new stuff to digest.

another Belgian band... "Soulwax" is growing on me too.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of Belgian music acts, past and present. A few of them are covered in TP's reviews.

Front 242
Hooverphonic
K's Choice
Soulwax
Technotronic
Axelle Red
Dive
Arid
Suicide Commando (not to be confused with the band from Minneapolis)
Zap Mama
Soulsister
Belle Perez

Just as a side note, the saxophone was invented by a Belgian musician, a fellow named Adolph Sax, in the 1840s.

And of course, who could forget Plastic Bertrand. (Yeah, I know: just about anyone.)

As a Belgian, I must say don't EVEN discuss without mentioning Plastic Bertrand (DJ's note, it's prononunced plaus-TEEK-behr-TRON) whose C'est Plan Pour Moi sounds note for note like the Damned's Jet Boy and was famously covered by Sonic Youth. But my vote goes to....THE SPANKS. Listen to 'In Your Face' LP and realize what most garage bands are after. Another one of those (rare) great LPs that escaped TP.
