New Order tribute?

Has anyone heard this Rihanna single called "Shut Up and Drive"? The melody / chords sound a lot like "Blue Monday" to me

I thought that, too. But I've sworn so many different songs lift from "Blue Monday" that I figured it was just me.

There's a song on the new MIA album which pretty much lifts the "Blue Monday" chord progression, but slows it down and kind of tinker-toyizes it.

Just checked it out - yup. Even more blatant then Avril's Rubinoos rip (hear the mashup here).

Couple of days ago I played along with both "He's So Fine" and "My Sweet Lord" on keys and they're actually NOT the the same. Apart from their different rhythms ("My Sweet Lord" heavy rock groove vs "He's So Fine"'s finger-snapping shuffle) they're diff chord progressions: tho both in f#, "He's So Fine" goes to G#, while "My Sweet Lord" goes to B. You couldn't mix 'em even if the rhythms were the same. George is innocent!

New Order collaboration

New Order are actually listed as co-composers on the track. Whether that means it was cribbed from "Blue Monday" so badly that they had to be credited--or whether it was a willing re-working of the song is a question I can't answer. But Universal is not trying to hide the fact that it's a "Blue Monday" riff. . . It's willingly acknowledged.

Wow, the Rubinoos v. Avril is funny. I've heard the Avril only once, but that Rubinoos track is just like mainlining Tang in terms of pure hooks and goofy clapalongs.

Well, New Order's "Run" (from TECHNIQUE) ended up in some legal hot water for ripping off John Denver's "Leaving (on a Jet Plane)" (if memory serves), so we can all learn a lesson there (don't steal from John Denver when you can steal from someone else?).

Additionally, there are some who claim The Cure made a career of lifting New Order. There is compelling evidence (i.e. songs) to back this up.

Rihanna is a young person. She's put out 3 full-length releases before the age of 20. I wouldn't know her if she came up and slapped me upside the head with a "Blue Monday" (Money-losin' Manchester) 12"...

How...does it...feel?
