The yardwork is done and my teeth have been flossed.

Starting things off with Maximo Park, (the new one...thanks IR) like a modern day Sparks in places, or England's (ala Verve) Shore . A touch of Midge Ure/Ultravox era and presto L.A. meets Newcastle.

Now playing INTERPOL 'Turn on' essential 2002 release.

Break out the catnip!

I hate the Yankees, but up next is Graig Nuttles. Well New Yorkers know what I mean, up next is THE BLONDES.

For those of you keeping score, that's L.A and Newcastle one.

Sweet. I have three noon-to-midnight shifts to work, and then flying out of town on Labor Day for business. But I'll have a well-loaded iPod for company.

Am I missing some of the lingo, or are some of these threads totally incoherent? Someone jots down a boozy sentence fragment and everyone who gets it responds to it. hmmmm.

nosepail, We simply call the posts a "STEVE". He's the late-period Gilliam (or early Lynch) of the board mixed with substance (the other kind). It's shoegaze commentary where the overall texture is more important than the inherent melody. They appear on Friday nights when the cage door opens. Somebody posted a transliteration key awhile back but I can't seem to find it now. Variously, we've tried to write our own STEVEs at times though they were all mere imitations. Just pop a Dramamine and hang on to the proper nouns.

Let's see I kicked off this weekend by watching the T. Rex movie Born to Boogie, which I just bought tonight, then I listened to a Tyrannosaurus Rex comp & Icky Thump by the White Stripes then I listened to Francoise Hardy: The Vogue Years & Francoise Hardy Sings In English while reading The Peabody Sisters & burning a couple of Martin Newell CDs for a friend.

Boston?

Matt Murphy's Pub in Brookline. It's in the building that originally housed my great-grandfather's business, Steverman Electric. There's even a little plaque indicating as much. And it's an Irish pub. Not an "Irish" pub. An Irish pub. I'd recommend going at lunchtime/early afternoon.

I spent the weekend sunning my pathetic pale hide on the sand dunes of beautiful Ludington, Michigan.

But alas for the U of Michigan! My mere presence in the state spread my sports death-touch (the home team loses any game I go to) to the Wolverines, and they went down to one of the most humiliating defeats in college football history. And just the fact that my drive up there took me within spitting distance of South Bend similarly doomed Notre Dame for the weekend.

Hey Breno, I have much love for Ludington. I just hope you brought your own music to listen to up there. Pickings are generally pretty slim, though I did hear some Aztec Camera (Stray) a couple summers ago on some sorta public station.

For as seldom as I was in the car, the Ludington radio station was fine. Plus, the DJ sat in the window, like Samuel L. Jackson in DO THE RIGHT THING and Chris on NORTHERN EXPOSURE.

I don't remember seeing any DJs in the window, but I do remember the farm reports on WKLA. My family did a lot of camping in that area when I was a kid. I have a real nostalgic attachment to that place.

Let me apologize to the Michigan Wolverines and their fans for visiting their beautiful state on the opening weekend of football season. They have now gone 0-2 for the first time in nearly 50 years.

If there's any team you really hate and want me to visit their state on opening weekend next year, let me know now and I can begin to plan for it. My presence in state seems to be a certain kiss of death.

Count me in as a regular subscriber to chip in annual gasbucks to doom Ohio States season.
Even though Florida thrashed them Boinkeyes in both basketball and football last year they remain in debt to this state for their '02 Fiesta Bowl theft.
Isn't that right Mr Baker?

After last years elecrifying finish, sadly, Cinderella and Boise State's luck has just run out.

The motto of the NL Central is "No team left behind." It's like Milwaukee keeps begging someone else to come take the lead but no one is willing to. The whole division needs to just go home and send the Keystone Kops to represent the NL Central in the playoffs.

My Dawgs lost to Steve Superior & the Gamecocks last weekend, and the Braves are all but eliminated from postseason play... well, at least the Atlanta Falcons still have a shot at 0-16.

Of course, the NBA & NHL are both right around the corner: Atlanta's going to represent (actual results may vary)!
