Re: Bo Diddley is still alive

Bo Diddley is still alive
August 28, 2007 01:56PM
I'm always surprised to see news stories about the state of Bo Diddley's health, since I could swear he died 20 years ago. Anyhow, I guess he just had a heart attack and I wish him well.

It was the same thing when Fats Domino was rescued from New Orleans after Katrina. I was amazed, since I was convinced he'd been dead for years.

How about Chubby Checker? Is he still alive?

Oh, I'm well aware that Bo's still with us cuz he comes thru town every now and again - saw him a few years ago. Beware! He actually doesn't do much BoDiddley-beat type stuff, more Chicago blooz. But if that's your bag, he's fun.

I was actually reading about Chubby recently and he's basically given up trying to do anything else except The Twist on the nostalgia/state fair circuit. Lawd knows he tried - psychedelia, disco, nothing stuck. He'll twist into the grave.

Friends of mine honeymooned in New Orleans 12-13 years ago, and came back reporting that Fats Domino was alive...and I was surprised.

Several years ago a friend of mine went to a Day of the Dead party where attendees were supposed to dress as their favorite dead person. So he put on a white shirt and tie, pinned a picture of Marilyn Monroe on his shirt, carried around an old portable typewriter, etc., and went as Arthur Miller. He got very tired of being told that Miller was still alive (at the time) and wished he'd gone with Plan B, which was to dress in drag, wear a crown, and pin a stuffed horse to himself and go as Catherine the Great.

Another friend of mine got so tired of always being wrong in assuming that Red Buttons was dead that he almost threw a party to celebrate when poor Red finally expired last year.

Gah! Don't know why I'm awake at 3:30 a.m., but THE LAST KISS is starting on cable in the next room, and after only two minutes I already loathe it as much as I did GARDEN STATE. Fuck Zach Braff.

Ah! SNAKES ON A PLANE is on another channel. Thank God.

I always get her confused with Lynn Anderson, for some reason.
But the thing about the list is, check out the genre of longevity.
Is Wyman the oldest rock star aside from the Everly Bros?

he had a stroke onstage at a casino about 30 minutes from my front door. i never even considered attending...

he might be alive, but he's been doing crappy shows for the last 20 years.

Re: Bo Diddley is still alive

borgnine does the voice of MermaidMan on Spongebob..............

I spent big dollars to see the Everly Bros "open" for sIMON & garfinkel 3 years ago which amounted to them coming out during the s n' g set and playing 4 songs...........

Ginger baker has to be up there with Wyman..............

Berry still "performs" with a band put together 20 minutes before he goes on stage, which i don't mind as much as the shit eatin' grin on Berry's face the whole time...............

Delvin is 70????? that explains the crumudginess........

I think this is a good opportunity to give a shout-out to my two favorite celebrity survivors: Abe Vigoda and Ernest Borgnine.

Show some damn respect, y'all....

Chuck Berry — born 18 October 1926, and yes, still performing regularly.

Bo Diddley — born 30 December 1928, and also still performing.

Bill Wyman — born 24 October 1936 (older than any of his ex-bandmates ... but you knew that already), and still performing with his band The Rhythm Kings.

Don Everly — born 1 February 1937 (hmm, same birthday as me)
Phil Everly — born 19 January 1939
The Everly Brothers also are still performing.

but there's gotta be a few we're forgetting

and i guess i answered my own longevity question
i was thinking that rock stars don't age well but
there are more old country stars cuz country's older

I don't understand why the Everlys played only 4 songs in the middle of Simon & Garfunkle's set. It would have been better & more respectful to at least open up for them w/a 45 min or so set.

Also, the Everlys' mid-60s period had plenty of great songs. It seems to be that part of their box set that I constantly play & Two Yanks In England is a great album.

Wanda Jackson is in her 70s and still performing rock&roll.

The Ventures still get it done, primarily in Japan, it seems. Nokie has to be WELL into his '70s. I notice his preferred playing style--much like BB King--is now sitting.

Scotty Moore just played a date in August (born December 27, 1931).

In other news, Colin Ferguson said that Iggy Pop was so old that he looked like "beef jerky." I laughed pretty hard at that.

Mouth (of Mouth & MacNeal) is 70. And alive.
("How Do You Do?" ; 1971 hit)
Re: Rock musician still alive

I came across a two-disc best of Mouth & McNeal a couple of years ago. Was quite amazed that there were two discs worth, though I suppose they may have had many more hits in Holland or Sweden or wherever the heck they were from.

What it was doing in a used record store in St. Louis is another question.

Does Ronnie Biggs count?
Apart from the Top Ten single he did with the Sex Pistols (No One is Innocent), he sang for Die Toten Hosen and made a 1974 biographical LP Mailbag Blues.
He is 78 and currently serving the remainder of his sentence (he's had a heart attack, a stroke and is tube fed. Link.).
