Re: The son slays the father

The son slays the father

I'm watching Sufjan Stevens on Austin City Limits and really marveling at exactly how much he did lift from his tenure in the Danielson Famile - the quirky but catchy, oddly instrumented folk music, the band all wearing matching, outsider art influenced costumes, etc. Which is fine - Daniel Smith is way too weird to ever achieve much more success than he already has, so it might as well be a buddy/hand-picked protege who builds on his vision and gets more famous with it than he likely ever will himself.

So who are some other musicians who have taken their mentors' vision to higher heights than the original ever achieved? (I would throw out some more myself, but I have too much of a headache to think of any. I'm just incredibly pleased the STL PBS station has finally started showing Austin City Limits again.)

I don't think shostakovich or mingus slayed the father (and come on, I'm a die-hard Laker fan, but I gotta admit that NO-ONE has slain jordan) in the sense that they become more succesful then their mentor. However:

Gun Club > White Stripes

Schoolly D > Ice T, NWA

Chuck Berry > Keith Richards

Pixies > Nirvana
