The Dating Game, TP style

Has anyone else out there ever clinched (or ruled out) a romantic interest based on the other person's musical taste (or lack thereof)?

I mentioned one such instance on the recent Hüsker Dü thread. There was another girl I once was dating; she was watching MTV with me one day, some time in the mid-'80s, when the network aired a "Closet Classic." It was Bowie, in his glam days.

The girl freaked out, seeing His Ziggyness for the first time. She knew Bowie had a long musical history, but she had assumed he'd always been this suave, sharp-dressed Let's Dance character.

I thought to myself, "Next thing ya know, she'll be surprised that McCartney was in a band before Wings." An old cliché, I know ... but as it turned out, I was not far off. She recognized Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band only as a musical with the BeeGees and Peter Frampton.

No, she surely was not the girl for me.

My college roomate dumped a girl because she said her favorite song on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain was "Hit The Plane Down". He mulled it over for a few days, agonizing how any human being could possibly think that song, of all the great songs on that album, could possibly be considered the best, and then finally decided the girl just could not possibly be cool, and ended it. I think he made the correct choice.

im from brooklyn and my musical interests are kind of kept to myself in the respect that i never really hung in a crowd that had my musical interests.
i remember once meeting a girl who smoked a lot and i told her. " you smoke more then keith richards". she had no idea who keith rchards was. relationshit over.
one girl asked me this. what the hell are you listening to?
now it wasnt one of those tp weirdo bands that we listen to.
it was nirvana smells like teen spirit,. i told her about nirvana n kurt cobains death she never heard of him. i cut the date short .

i was in another relationship for 6 months and we are in the car and i can remember social d on the cd player and she was complaining she hates my music. with that we had a scene that reminded me of the scene in diner where the guy yells at his gf for not caring who plays on a record.
relationshit over.
q for you guys. where do you meet women who are into your type of music?
Re: The Dating Game, TP style

other hobbies, definitely.
But music, nope.
gave up on that idea decades ago

love emo girls though
(real emo, not what MySpacers think is "emo")

had a girlfriend who thought Richard Thompson was "creepy punk rock" she continually* referred to what she called "your music", insinuating that I was the only Earth resident that bought/knew about these albums

had a girlfriend that watched our band cover REM and told me I was good but needed to play "real" rock and roll (was right after Reckoning came out)

had a date actually leave the apartment when I put Zen Arcade on; thought I was trying to get rid of her

brought a girl home after drinks and put on Psychocandy. She said it was the worst thing she'd ever heard. Why? Because they were "faking it". I stretched, yawned and mentioned an early alarm clock.

had a date that saw my large collection and then was insulted when I had no Motley Crue. You mean it's all jazz or something?

how many dates have said "I've never heard of any of those bands"? Dozens, some right after they claimed that music was the most important thing in their lives (probably right up there with "long walks on the beach")

*and I mean, like every other conversation we ever had, this got mentioned with heavy, dripping disdain on the word "your"

(Oops, might be too personal - you don't have to answer.)

made a girl cry when i played the residents "duck stab" and started dancing to said music..........

spent hard earned bucks on the following crap:
Fleetwood mac

had an epiphany during a Gang of Four show when I turned to my "date" and said I fucking hated her

knew i was going to marry my wife when at the Fleadh she went with me to the alternative tent to see X instead of going to the mainstage with everyone else to see Sinead O'Connor............

One girlfriend was describing her son. He was previously a leather-jacketed punk who was really into Pistols/Damned/Clash. She cheerily said, "but he matured and now he's into country line dancing".
Me, thinking I understand: "Ohhhh. He's a poseur".

[sound of relationship buzzer]

Some great stories, guys.

As for me, my college roommate fixed me up on a blind date, and the evening was going just fine. And then, she and I both suddenly perked up the same way when Roxy Music came on the radio. It was love ... and still is, after 16 years of marriage.

All I can say is, I'm a very lucky man.

How exactly do you explain to somebody that listening passively, indecisively, and using the stereo as vacuum filler while using the format containing the music as mall product to fulfill one's expectations as a consumer, is not important; and that what is important is knowing who's in the band, their ages, what city they come from, what their roots are, what connections they have to other bands, what label they're on (in the 80s/90s), and whether they're a touring outfit or not??
If they see this as non-relevant to the state of existence, then it's just too easy to conclude that other areas of their tastes and personality are going to be jarringly vacuous. No art culture? No left side of brain!

good gods i'm such a snob

This is a wonderful thread.

Having known my wife since 1985, we've long since accepted one another's shortomings/eccentricities in this area. I'm certainly more interested in music than she is, but we manage to tolerate one another, so it's not a problem.

However, I recently discussed a blind date one of my good (single) friends had just had, and he presented this damning fact:

"Two years ago, she (the other party on his blind date) went to Belgium by herself to see a Foo Fighters show."

He found this very troubling. Now, I wouldn't travel across the street for a Foo Fighters show myself, but I thought maybe he should give her the benefit of the doubt for making the effort...?

I've given Deadheads the benefit of the doubt all these years, who am I to judge?

> I may be Belgian, but, hey, I'm the first to admit it's anything but a tourist mecca.

My wife & I spent a week in Belgium in 2002, and we would go back in a heartbeat! Gorgeous, lush countryside. Brussels is a fine city, and Brugge is a wonderful place to visit, albeit a bit touristy. A variety of beer probably rivaled only by Heaven itself. And easy access to Paris, London and Amsterdam.

Whenever I'm going to travel, the first thing I do is check out the music listings online, to see if I can check out any cool act(s) while I'm in town.

When the Velvets reunited in 1993 for their European tour, the Mrs. and I vowed we would see them once they started playing in North America, even if we had to travel cross-country to do so. Sadly, that chance never came.

Yep, the food I dined on in Belgium was great — "French cuisine in German portions at Greek prices," my host said. And during a visit to Seattle recently, I was reminded of how delicious Neuhaus Chocolates are.

As for the beers, I have tried my best to clone the styles I enjoyed there. I've had good luck with Trappist, witbier, saison and even bière brut. Haven't dared to try a gueuze clone.

Like Colorado, it's hard to find a half-decent-sized town in Belgium that doesn't have its own local brewery. The Straffe Henrik brewery in Brugge was my favorite.

Where else can you sample beers with the brand names Lucifer and Satan?

Not familiar with The Spanks, but I'll check 'em out.

Spanks were pre-Strokes/Hives; garage with the usual punk sensibilities. but comes off more 13th Floor Nuggets than Ramones. I think the whole catalog might be on the one CD "In Your Face".

edit: btw the Spanks sang in English

I had "Thunder Road" on in the car one day, with a girl and sang out "you ain't a beauty but, hey your allright" then looked at her.

She promptly asked me to let her out, never saw her again.

Mustn't been a Springsteen fan.
