Was there any group that kicked more ass than the Huskers in their prime (say '83 - '85)? Is it possible to have more passion and angst than Bob Mould screaming himself hoarse on Eight Miles High?

I saw them in '87, at one of their last-ever shows, and they gave one of the most ass-kicking performances I have ever seen. They played four "sets." The first one consisted of the entire Warehouse album, beginning to end. For the second, they spent about an hour playing some of their better-known (by the audience, at least) songs. The third was a 45-minute acoustic set. And they closed with a 30-minute instrumental.

They didn't speak a word to the audience during that whole show ... which, I decided later, was fitting, since they left me speechless too.

A couple days after that show, I told a girl that I'd been interested in about it. She wasn't familiar with Hüsker Dü. When I told her the show had lasted almost four hours, she was astonished: "They were able to hold the audience's interest for that long?" My interest in her evaporated on the spot.

At the '87 Norman's show I had an extra ticket. My wife and friends went in and I was outside hawking the tick. Christmas was already on. Grant Hart walked up to me and we chatted. Interesting convo. I went in and told my friends , "enjoy, this is the only time you'll see this band."

Norman's was an unusual club because it was in a new strip mall in a clean part of an outer suburb. It was the upstairs of a Gold's Gym. This street was a few blocks off a large parkway near a large reservoir/dam (which in next to the ritzy-at-the-time Cherry Creek High School area) but this strip mall was never that successful or busy. This was at the tail end of the era when most would dress up for a show in a mix of everything from mohawk punks to brit fop to new wave dominatrix (wifey). And they'd all be standing there in front of this Gold's Gym in a big suburban parking lot. Not as classic as the old Rainbow Music Hall (now a Walgreen's though they incorporated the historic sign into the Walgreen's, making it the coolest Walgreen's, I suppose) but still legendary, locally.

Don't think I was at the same show, Paganizer; same year, but it was at a club in Aurora. The group Christmas wasted our time as the opening act.

As for the young lady I mentioned, well, I said this in a post a year ago: I couldn't be romantically interested in a woman who didn't love VU, Roxy, the Ramones or the Clash as much as I do.

Thinking back, I'd bet money that this girl had never even heard of the first three. (Maybe she knew "Rock the Casbah.")
