(Being in NYC and more a Mets fan than Yankees, I would still say these examples really are musical equivalents to the Mets - I really wouldn't emphasize the talent angle too much)

I'm guessing he did try to answer my question with a picture (which is worth ... well, you know), but his answer just didn't show up on my screen. So I take back what I said, Satch. Much respect.

To suggest an (admittedly obvious) answer to the original question: Pearl Jam. Plenty of instrumental talent, a distinctive singer, deep roots in one of the most respected bands in their original scene, and the consistent support of a major label. Yet the group, IMO, hasn't put out an album that really has delivered the payload since Vs.
