i'm doing an article for Spin about the state of CBGB (it might close) and was wondering if any of you guys have extraordinary memories/stories about the club you'd care to share for possible use in the story....

I have a story and photos about CBGB 1978 on my Punks and Provocateurs exhibit site. [rebelrebelle.blogspot.com]

You can quote excerpts if you like from the text, but use of the photos would have to be negotiated. I think the photo from the stage is quite amusing. It's the view of the crowd one would see from the mike in 1978- a dream for many musicians, but the sight of the actual audience in all of its uneventful banality was actually a letdown (then and now). For kicks I would rather go to the Mudd Club in those days... still, CBGBs was all about music, and definately Not ambiance!

I'm auctioning one of the Pere Ubu (performing at CBGB) photos this week on Ebay - Category: Art: Photographic Images
You will find it on EBAY under the following titles-

PUNKS and PROVOCATEURS Exhibit PERE UBU - David Thomas
Item number: 7327179819

The auction BEGINS Thurs. June 2nd at 7:30pm and ENDS 10 days later on Sunday June 12 7:30pm
If there is a good response, I might put up more photos from the series later. Bidding starts at $24.99

50 % of the net proceeds of these prints will be donated to MSF (Doctors without Borders) for their work with women and families who have contracted HIV in Africa.

(Also on Ebay- Blondie 1979, and Gia and Sandy Linter at the Mudd Club, 1979)
Take care-

Probably obvious, but;
As someone from out of town, my pilgrimage was initially shocking. I thought it would be in a nice neighborhood. Something at least as bright and shiny as 42nd (heh heh). Walking through the bowery, therefore was...interesting.
