Did you ever make up a fantasy band? When I was in 11th grade, I made up a heavy metal band called, get this, Hydra Strain. I even made a list of their albums in a notebook with song titles I can no longer recall. We'd get on stage in black leather (I know, nothing new here) but here's the twist: We'd all have tails. Thick leather tails. And we would wear alligator and komodo lizard masks. All I can say is you had to be there. Not really. The reason is as apparent as the nose on one's face. Or as the tails on hoip chiggs's "band."

Actually, there's a whole section in the GBV documentary where Bob Pollard runs down all of the make believe bands he and his brother devised while growing up, complete with artwork and track-listing.

So Guided By Voices is like a make-believe band on steroids.
