make believe bands

Did you ever make up a fantasy band? When I was in 11th grade, I made up a heavy metal band called, get this, Hydra Strain. I even made a list of their albums in a notebook with song titles I can no longer recall. We'd get on stage in black leather (I know, nothing new here) but here's the twist: We'd all have tails. Thick leather tails. And we would wear alligator and komodo lizard masks. All I can say is you had to be there. You had to be in my lonely, sweaty, sickly bedroom to witness the magic happening.

during my early 90s corporate music mall store days I, as well as a female co-worker, created a fictional hardcore band called the Geriatric Stiffies who semi-regularly played gigs in New Brunswick, NJ. She'd made a 7" inch cover for her artclass that depicted old man from the waist down with a growing bulge in his slacks aided by an air pump he was squeezing. i don't recall the name of the song.

"Has anyone ever pondered why women almost never post to this board?"

Not really. The reason is as apparent as the nose on one's face. Or as the tails on hoip chiggs's "band."

Actually, there's a whole section in the GBV documentary where Bob Pollard runs down all of the make believe bands he and his brother devised while growing up, complete with artwork and track-listing.

So Guided By Voices is like a make-believe band on steroids. And redemption for all those make-believe bands that dissipated into thin air...

three notes on this topic: The imaginary band of my high school years (in the late '60s, remember) was Funky Bulldog. There was a fictional TP house band Dave Schulps led (and, I believe, at one point incarnated) called Ace Ligger and the Hors D'Oeuvres. And Dr. Frank's novel King Dork is filled with fleshed out bands conjured by the imagination of its teenaged protagonist

I just submitted several posters to a show here in STL dedicated to concert posters for non-existent bands, featuring such combos existing only in my mind as the Eisenhower Death Train, Advanced Idea Mechanics, Savage Breast and Reverse Cowgirl.
If I figure out how, I'll post some images.
