The 7 Most Unforgivable Grammy Snubs:

I didn't realize that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was nominated at all, let alone against Clapton's easy listening version of "Layla."

And #2 just...boggles the mind.

It was Bill Ward who was responsible for Nanny Dickering (the aforementioned Fanny) and he drew all of his women like that. Bob Fingerman and Peter Bagge did some work with Cracked. Back in `70's I devoured these magazines. Even then I was the contrarian, I preferred Cracked over Mad. Most likely because Severin and Ward were such great artists over what was in Mad (sorry to Jack Davis, Sergio Aragones and Don Martin) the exception being Dave Berg. I read Sick and Crazy but more out of a sense of wanting to keep up than anything else. I did like the song parodies in Crazy, though.

Ward was an interesting guy - he drew cheesecake starting in WWII (think it was called Torchy) all the way until he died, sadly by then he was being published in porn magazines. One story he used to tell was how Winsor McCay's (Little Nemo) son came to his office to give them his dad's old work and they didn't know who McCay was at that time and they turned him away!

When did CRACKED become the source of all lists? Back in the olden days they were just a rip-off of MAD Magazine, but had the good fortune to employ the great John Severin as one of their artists. But as far as I can recall that was about all they had to recommend them. Still, they were better than SICK or CRAZY.

CRACKED's mascot was some dumb little blond doof in white overalls, I seem to recall, and CRAZY had some little creep who looked like a humorous version of the Shadow or something. But I don't remember who SICK magazine had for a mascot.
