 another list
Author: Heff

Guess I'm really a middle-aged grouchy guy when a list like this makes my day: 20 worst hipster bands

Also for laughs: worst all time

I had forgotten that the Dude hated the eagles. I have to add another positive percentage point to the movie. dude

Funny that the comments for the hipster list were mostly in the "you suck" vein, while for the worst bands, the comments were "good list but what about ..."

I'm sure the Decemberists are perfectly fine people, but it has always annoyed the hell out of me that they added the "e" in the name. Like it would confuse potential fans if they didn't. Calculated and patronizing at the same time.

Wow. Aside from Beach House, I'm totally vermin-free. Oh happy day!

...

And since Opal isn't making records these days, I'll have to be content with Beach House.

Since when were they hip, anyway?

...

Do they still make those t-shirts that say "YOUR FAVORITE BAND SUCKS?"

This list bothered me just a bit, in that the blogger included this sarcastic question for each band on the list: "What part of Colorado are they from?"

Oh well, so much for that. So, Ben Westhoff's college classmates all had "questionable" taste, huh? That sounds like a "moral equivalency" kind of statement. I didn't question my classmates' appreciation of Journey, Styx or REO Speedwagon at all. Their taste sucked. Moving right along!

I'll be glad when it's no longer hip to hate hipsters. Now people who only heard the word hipster a week ago are kicking them around, and it's making it hard for people who've been complaining about them for years to do so anymore.

Yes, even retarded outsider conservative country singers now proclaim that

"Hipsters Ruin Everything"

in songs that sound derived from some article they read, rather than anything experienced (argyle socks? That's new to me...)

I think that although the site's "20 Sexiest Female Musicians" list betrays some confusion between singers and musicians, it handily confirms that one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Grace Jones? Courtney Love? Samantha Fox?

...

What a putz-a-rama.

Most so-called hipsters probably would disavow at least half of the artists on the "20 worst hipster bands" list. The Decemberists? Bon Iver? MGMT? Arcade Fire? Freakin' Death Cab? No way, man; those bands are so mainstream. Regular people know about those bands, for crissakes!

I worked with a woman who was going through a divorce about 6 or 7 years ago. For a period of several weeks, she would sit at her desk and play Death Cab for Cutie's Plans through her computer's speakers while crying for most if not all of the workday. I wanted to offer her some type of sympathy, but I also really wanted to throw her computer down a flight of stairs.

I left that job before it came to that.

We still cross paths now and then. She went on to marry a second time, and seems content. I don't know if she still listens to Death Cab for Cutie.

At my last radio gig, I received a call every other week from a girl who would request Death Cab's "I Will Possess Your Heart." She always ended her call with, "Thanks! Love you! Bye!"

We've got the same problem here with the Ur-filters. Good luck looking up practically anything to do with The Velvet Underground.

Tellingly, Doug Yule remains unblocked.

...

On a semi-related note, I see somebody finally released "Squeeze" on CD. I almost barfed into the "V" bin at local the record store. There are worse records, but that's the worst one the the VU brand-name on it.

"Squeeze!" It's a Yule log.

Best meta-humor ever
--------------------------------------------------

My challenge still stands: Define hipster (without using it the way high school kids use emo, i.e. "some guy I just don't like").

The scenster kids I know routinely complain about hipsters. The middle-aged dads I know, who haven't followed music in 15 years, use the term for anybody that still enjoys music. Their wives use it for anybody who shops a different clothing store than them.

This makes it impossible to understand what anybody is complaining about when they attempt derogation with the term.

Hipster is a word with as many definitions as there are people using it.

For my resolutely unhip friend who never hears any song until it's performed on American Idol and who dismisses IKEA as "that furniture store only hipsters like" (needless to say, he's never set foot in an IKEA), a hipster is defined as "anyone who has the nerve to like something I know nothing about but choose to frame my ignorance of such things as a conscious choice and not just a reflection of the fact that I fear new things. Thus, anybody who bothers to find out about that kind of stuff only does so because they're hipsters who just want to look cool, because really, the only way to know if a song is any good is to see it on Idol. I used to like Glee, too, until I began to suspect that some of the people involved with it were hipsters, too."

For aging music fans, a hipster is defined as "those damn kids who've elbowed their way into MY rightful spot in the pop culture pecking order and are getting it wrong wrong wrong I mean holy shit! those idiots act like the fucking Arcade Fire is the best band in the world and all the while Yo La Tengo are STILL plugging away but no one cares, oh those fucking hipsters are screwing everything up."

For hipsters, a hipster is defined as "that shallow trend jumper who bought that Eisenhower Death Train album five minutes after I did but that meant the commercial it's playing on had a chance to air TWICE, while I downloaded it from the Stereofork feed three minutes BEFORE that commercial aired the freaking FIRST time but now that they've been in a commercial the Eisenhower Death Train suck anyway so let the hipsters have 'em, I don't give a shit."

What the hell is "Toms?" The Organic Toothpaste? Or is that simply "all-natural" toothpaste? Is there a difference? Does anyone care?

Q. - What do the hipsters brush their teeth with?
A. - Stereolab had a song called "Crest." Have you heard the demo?

They (Toms) look like slippers to me.

Now when I was the age to be what today would be a hipster we of the upper crust of hipdom wore these

http://www.chinadirectstore.com/images/men_shoes/s010b1.jpg

We'd go down to Chinatown and buy them for $4 a pair. Wake me when they come back.

That's hipster gear? I grabbed a cheap pair of canvas shoes at Wal-Mart this summer that look a lot like those ... those ...

Chinese shoes.

I wear 'em when I'm listening to Beach House.

They look a lot like the Vans slip-ons I wore in college, but with less styling. Everything old eventually is new again.

R. Totale, when I 1st started seeing Tom's around, thats what I thought they were. They have been quite popular for a couple of years now.

HBK and Delvin, you guys are my bros. Those 2 types of shoes are what I have worn most of my life (being veg and all.)
