On the one hand, the new record is a calculated move to go back to the Copper Blue sound. On the other hand, he's really, really good at that, so why not? The whole record rocks like crazy.

Thanks for the tip Michael. I'm one of those who thinks Flip Your Wig is the best thing Husker Du ever did and I love Copper Blue as well so it sounds like it's right up my alley.

Sa-weet! A reason to stop at the music store on my way home! Suck that, Gaslight Anthem!

Please tell me it's good. That would be the bee's knees if Uncle Bob put out a strong record. His last 3 have really bummed the hell out of me. Some real genuine hard rock would be just what I crave.

Has anyone caught him live doing Copper Blue on this tour? I just got my tickets in the mail.

I've listened to an advance multiple times. I think it's great. It's very stripped down, power trio stuff. Personally I really like Life and Times and Body of Song, but Silver Age is, I think, better. It's got the classic Sugar sound (minus the keyboards) without sounding like he's cloning himself.

I saw him do CB during SXSW. He played it like the record - bam bam bam, no banter between songs, just bashing it out. He looked like he was enjoying himself, and Jon Wurster on drums had a "I can't believe I get to do this!" look on his face.

My understanding of his upcoming tour is that he's going to do CB, but also feature SA stuff and old favorites. Should be a hell of a show.

Bob is playing DC on September 8. Same day as Mission of Burma. Old punks around here must be sobbing.

I've been going back and forth on this one. Sugar is starting early while MOB is later on. Since the clubs are only a few blocks away, I think I'm going to try and hit both. Amazing that I'm thinking this since when only a few years ago, I had given up on going to shows.

Rolling Stone is streaming the new disc:

Michael's praise is well-deserved.

Strong record. I don't find most of these songs quite as memorable as I'd like but I really like the sound of the album. He still has a knack with hooks.......best thing he's done in a long time.

Is it really "Sugar" or is it Mould with other members, playing Sugar tunes? I admit I'm confused.

One of the loudest shows I've ever seen? Bob Mould, solo acoustic. First Avenue, Minneapolis, 2/25/95. Just went to look at the ticket stub.

It's Bob Mould with Jason Narducy and Jon Wurster playing Copper Blue. If the club is billing them as Sugar, Mould will probably be pissed.

The only acoustic shows I've ever had to wear earplugs for are Mould shows. The loudest show I've ever been too, though, was Sugar on the CB tour. My earplugs meant nothing. Of course, I was also standing right in front of Bob and his rig.

I saw Husker Du in '85 and my ears rang all the next day. 'Twas after that show that I began bringing earplugs to shows.

Loudest show: Fugazi, Syracuse, 1993. As soon as the first chord attacked me from the enormous speakers right near the mosh pit, I turned and fled for my life.

Mould is coming to Seattle on 18 September. As it happens, though, my parents will be visiting that week. So, as much as I love Mould in general, and Copper Blue in particular, I'll probably have to be the gracious host and forgo the gig.

I saw the Dü in 1987; if I'm not mistaken, Paganizer was in the audience at the same show, in Aurora, Colorado (we've compared notes on this board). I don't know if it's the loudest show I've attended, since I remembered my earplugs that night. But it rivals Springsteen as the longest.

I attended a few Mercyland (ironically, fronted by Mould's Sugar bandmate David Barbe) shows that resulted in something beyond hearing damage. The sonic bludgeoning inflicted upon my ch'i (氣) was so great I began a decade-long quest to repair my life force. After extensive research into herbal remedies and the consumption of pepper-based foods, my ch'i was mostly restored by age 28. Unfortunately, an unintended side effect of my quest was the onset of asthma, thus curtailing the exploration of one the paths I'd ventured down. I continue to enjoy capsicum's physical and spiritual benefits, however.

It's hard for me to pinpoint one particular show as the loudest I ever attended, but the Editors show in 2008 springs to mind. I was standing at least 15 feet in front of center stage, and their system moved so much air, I could feel the hairs on my arms moving! Yet their sound was so clean that, even at their most frenzied, I could discern the individual strings on the guitars, and the placement of each drum and cymbal in the kit.
