The first trailer for A Curious Mix of People, a documentary on the 90s Austin music scene that gave rise to Spoon, Sincola and Fastball, among others. I was interviewed for this due to my years with Pop Culture Press, though I'm not in the trailer.

Well, what do you know! A real live movie star in our midst.
Don't forget about us when you're hanging out at all the cool parties with your new celebrity friends like Clint Howard and Crystal Bernard.

Heather Thomas wrote one of those strange screenplays a few years back that are a blazing hot property around Hollywood without ever managing to be made into a movie. It was called School Slut.
This is a true fact, but why I know it is beyond me.

Do you know Luke Torn, Michael? I was in touch with him during the early part of the millennium (we were both writing for No Depression, I did a piece here and there for PCP, and we had a bit of a correspondence going on for a while). Last I heard, he said he had started writing about country music for the Wall Street Journal. (There's a song in there somewhere.) Nice chap.

I do know Luke, though it's been a while since I've seen him. He still writes for the WSJ, I think. He took over as editor of Pop Culture Press, but that coincided with the birth of his son Carter, which meant between that, his day job at the Legislature and the well-paid WSJ gigs, he wasn't able to really get PCP going again. Ah, well. Yes, he's a really good guy and a good writer.

It's good to hear that you know him--I was still in touch when he took over the editorship of PCP. It's too bad about that publication; it was a great one with a lot of heart (and I really enjoyed reading it).

Because it's called School Slut and (probably) would've starred Heather Thomas.

I miss PCP, too, even though I'd left its ranks to concentrate on High Bias not long after Luke took over. They had fantastic SXSW parties. I saw the Hoodoo Gurus plays most of Stoneage Romeos at one, Matthew Sweet and Susannah Hoffs debut their covers collaboration at another. The final one (which I missed, alas) featured That Petrol Emotion as headliner.
