Saw Cheap Trick last night. Apparently on their off nights during the Aerosmith tour they're booking their own headliner shows.
Can I just say they were awesome? They played the usual hits, of course, but also dug deeper into their catalog: "Clock Strikes Ten," "Need Your Love," "Just Got Back," "Oh Candy," "California Man," "Stop This Game" (long a personal fave), "I Know What I Want"...no "He's a Whore" this time (which they played last time they hit Austin), but otherwise an excellent show that really got the crowd going.
If I have any complaint, it was that they played only one song recorded in the past 20 years, but it was "Sick Man of Europe," which is a real scorcher.
They also seemed to be really enjoying themselves. They smiled at each other a lot and when they left the stage, Nielsen and Zander were smiling and laughing together. It's always good to see a band of veterans who so clearly still dig what they do.
Oh yeah - Nielsen dragged a little boy (looked about 6, though I was far enough away not to be able to tell exactly) with a mohawk up on stage. The kid looked astonished for about a second, then started rocking the fuck out. He also got to throw Nielsen's picks from the stage. That kid has been ruined (or as I prefer to think of it, saved) by rock & roll forever.

In April, Cheap Trick played at a benefit for the Moffitt Cancer Research Center in Tampa. A guy I worked with who attended was telling me about it. Said this band played called Cheap Trick and they were very good (this guy's on the older side and I'm guessing not much of a music fan). Bottom line is those guys just LOVE to play, and your report of the Austin show is just further proof.

I know a couple who looked at hiring Cheap Trick to play their wedding reception...supposedly, it's not as expensive as I'd assumed. Unfortunately, the band's touring schedule was already set, and it didn't work out. They went with a regular ol' cover band instead.

Sweet! So Jeff Spicoli finally met Miss Tasty and decided to tie the knot. Awesome!
I saw Cheap Trick three months ago, at a casino near Olympia. The band gave a tremendous show. Robin still has the voice. The group doesn't seem as tight with Bun E. on the injured-reserve list; Daxx Nielsen has a bit splashier style. But still a great band. And the setlist included a few songs I was thrilled to hear live, including "California Man," "Sick Man of Europe" and "Hard to Tell." In fact, when the guys played "The Flame," I realized it's actually not a bad song; it just has a cheesy, dated arrangement. Stripped of the synthesizers, it sounded great.
What bothered me was the response of every one of my new co-workers who love rock & roll, when invited to trek down to Olympia with me on a Saturday night to see Cheap Trick: "They're opening for Aerosmith this summer; I'll catch 'em then."

they're have been many before and probably will be more in the future; but this particular thread really gave me a jolt (ripper concert review MT) and reminded me that cheap trick is the greatest band alive (carl finch's brave combo is a close second though!

Man, I haven't seen Brave Combo in probably a dozen years, at least. I used to go see them a lot - they used to hit Austin pretty regularly. Not sure why I dropped off - I guess they don't tour as much and I have to admit, I got burned out on their records. But back then I would've agreed with you that they're one of the best live bands on earth.
