 Boston next month
Author: rhettlawrence

Yo nosepail - I'm gonna be in the Boston area next month on either end of a trip up to Acadia with my old law school buddy and our families. Know of any good shows happening from July 9-11 or July 19-20? OFF! and Refused are apparently playing on that Friday, July 20 and I'm thinking about that one, but it could be difficult since it's our last night in town and I may need to spend it with the wife and kid. (That also would have been the only night to catch a Sox game since both they and the Pawtucket team are on All-Star break for the rest of the time we're up there, but I've pretty much already ruled that out.)

My buddy lives out in Worcester and presumably knows the best way to keep track of who's coming through town, but do you have suggestions for a good online music schedule? Is there an alternative weekly kinda thing?

It's about time you got yourself on the right coast, Rhett (he said, writing from Concord, Mass., after a day researching and reminiscing with friends about school days in Boston).

Fuck music; get yourself to Fenway.

I apologize; I'm shallow.

Go Pixies and Fort Apache studios and Evan Dando.

Believe me, Erik - if I could feasibly catch a game at Fenway, I'd be there in a heartbeat. I just don't think it's going to work out on this trip 'cuz of the damn All-Star break.

I don't follow what you're suggesting with the Pixies and Dando. Are they playing there on one of those nights? Or are you suggesting I go knock on their doors? That actually would not be unheard of, as my wife and kid and I stalked Dan Zanes' home in Brooklyn a few years ago so my then-3-year-old daughter could slide a note to Dan under his door.

I was rooting for the home team (Go Pixies! instead of Go Red Sox!)

Have you checked pollstar.com? They have comprehensive listings for Boston--venues of all sizes, artists of all stripes.

In an alternately-tuned universe, Frank "Black" Francis manages the Boston Red Sox for one tumultuous season and earns his walking papers by insisting that the batting order be --- (you guessed it!) --- strictly alphabetical.

Ah, got it - sorry. Go Moving Targets!

I'll check out that site. Thanks! And if nosepail has other suggestions, bring 'em on....

That would be great, Rhett! Lets try to make something happen. I dont see any hot music events on those days, but maybe something will come along. I actually like OFF!, but only in about 15 minute increments. (the typical length of their albums). Plus, I am going to 5 concerts in the next couple weeks and my girl is about to pull the plug on me.

Fenway tickets should be ready available - the team is mediocre and waning in popularity. I bet you could score some right before the game at a reasonable price - otherwise, if you want security, you will probably have to pay stubhub prices. Or you can craigslist it, and maybe get lucky.

Cool - even if there's no music of note to be had, maybe we can grab a beer one of the nights we're actually in Boston (as opposed to being out in Wormtown where my buddy lives). Is your e-mail address still the Excite one listed on your profile here? If so, you must be one of the last 3 folks on the planet still using an Excite address! (I have a friend here who just quit using her Lycos address.)

As I mentioned above, the main problem with the Red Sox game is that they're on the All-Star break or away for every day we're in the area except for that last night, which would be problematic family-wise. I decided to splurge on a fancy hotel room for the last night of our vacation (and the only night we're actually staying in Boston proper). So I probably should be getting my money's worth and spending as much time in the pool and hot tub there with my kid on that night.

I would definitely like to grab a beer, Rhett. Yes, you can use that Excite address. Not sure why I keep it. Mostly I use it for when I need to order my pep pills or hairline cream. The layout of the excite home page hasnt changed in over 12 years.

What happened, Rhett? Did you diss me ? Would have enjoyed meeting you. I hope you ended up NOT going to Fenway. They suck.

"I hope you ended up NOT going to Fenway. They suck."

Fairweather fan. Pssh.

Getting my 3-year-old ready for daycare the other day, my wife asked me, "Can he wear his Red Sox shirt? Did they win last night?" I told her definitively that we are not fairweather fans and that he can wear it whenever and wherever he wants.

i think i love baseball fans like you guys more than the game itself (tear). I'm going on record here, you can quote me on this, the Rays will be true bottom feeders in the AL east this year.

Hey back, STEVE!

And yes, nosepail, I'm afraid I was forced to blow you off, though not intentionally. I ended up just being in Boston for that one night - the very last night of our trip, the one where we splurged for the fancy hotel (the Intercontinental, if you're wondering). My wife went out for drinks with an old college friend of hers, leaving me on kid duty for the night. So no Sox game, no Refused show, and no drinking till 3am. Hell, I didn't even get to watch endless airings of SportsCenter on the hotel cable. We did walk up to the North End for dinner at an Italian joint and then did some of the Freedom Trail on Saturday before we left, but the Boston component of the trip was entirely too brief. Next time though!
