A tremendous album this one is. Sort of an exercise in relationship self-destruction set around songs that veer into interesting little detours.
Would be curious what other TP'ers think of it. It's not a blazing Rock album by any means - it's very varied - much of it is countryish, but for me it completely works. I can picture others kind of admiring it but missing his trademark crunch though.
Echoes of Blood on The Tracks (a "personal" divorce record), his own past work, and in some ways more evocative of the Blues emotional experience than when he overtly works in that genre.

I just gave it a spin. It's like the White Stripes records for me - some of it I like quite a bit, some of it "meh." But all respect to him for doing some stuff way out of what we'd think of as his comfort zone(s). He could've just rehashed the Stripes all the way to the bank. (Though, let's face it, the Stripes records are basically solo albums anyway.)

I just listened to it this morning, by the way, without having read this suggestion. I liked "16 Saltines" a lot. Some other stuff sounded pretty good.

The Raconteurs' Broken Boy Soldiers is my favorite Jack White-related release, so that probably disqualifies from commenting on anything the guy does, but here goes:
I just listened to it for the first time. I think "Freedom at 21" is as good as anything I've heard from him as a performer. I dug a half dozen of the rest: "Missing Pieces," "Sixteen Saltines," "Weep Themselves to Sleep," "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy" and "I Guess I Should Go to Sleep." The other 6 of the 'em are okay-ish, I guess.
It's not a disappointment, necessarily, but I expected more of a departure. He comes up with some interesting concepts, executes most of them pretty well, but...I don't know, I'm not feeling Blood on the Tracks comparisons.
