Yeah, Heard that. . . He's certainly gone out with some fine performances over the last couple of years in the shape of those rambles down at his place in Bearsville. One got the sense that he had beaten it back. . .
That will mean the silencing of all of the Band's main singers. A damn shame that they (meaning Robbie included) couldn't pull things together for a show or two while Rick was still alive. (Richard, of course, has been gone for a while--since the early 1980s.)
A damn shame about Levon. He will be missed. A piece of American music will be gone.

A true story: During the brief period that I worked for Ira (I left to go back into academia, the little hell that it is, in 2001), I wore a beard. What my colleagues did or didn't know was that I wore it in tribute to the Band (i.e., specifically, Levon.)
I was teased for it a lot by colleagues (and compared to Zach Galif...I can't spell it). I was clean-shaven before that time and have been since.
At any rate, I'm trying to say that the potential of Levon's passing means a whole hell of a lot to me. Here's thoughts and prayers to Levon and family. . .

There aren't many true believers left. I'm glad that everyone in The Band has gained some amount of recognition over the past couple of decades.
On a more serious note, if Levon Helm is in his final stages, the least any of us can do is pray or send positive vibes or whatever seems constructive for his family and friends right now.

At least Levon's passing will be with dignity, without the shadow of drugs and alcohol hovering over his death, something we unfortunately can't say for Rick Danko and Richard Manual.
I love Levon, but I've always been more of a fan of the singing of Rick and Richard. When all three sang together, though, it was certainly magical.
If anyone hasn't read Levon's book This Wheel's on Fire, I highly recommend it.

Even if he weren't a great musician, I'd have loved him just for narrating The Right Stuff and playing Ridley, who always had some Beeman's for Chuck Yeager.
Rest in well-deserved peace, Levon.
