Talking today a lot about Nirvana with some friends (more in a historical sense than a musical one), and I mentioned in passing that "Husker Du was my Nirvana" even though I am of an age where I could have conceivably missed Husker Du and only heard Nirvana.
The gist of my statement had an artistic implication though - that I preferred Husker Du (for whatever reason - that they hit me at the right age, that they had 2 writers and I liked that facet, etc.)
This kind of got me thinking if I ever loved two bands who reminded me of each other where I liked the later band better. The closest I can think of is something like Elvis Costello, who I liked better than Graham Parker though I love Parker too - though that was sort of within the same timeframe anyway.
Is it possible to have a new band remind you alot of an all-time favorite and actually think the newer band is better?
Any examples?

I could mainline The Dukes of Statosphere or Plasticland over some of the older bands they were referencing. But not all of them. Barrett-era Floyd being a prime example.
But ... The Move?
That whole 80's retro-60s-garage thing was fun. Are the Black Lips retro 60s or retro 80's 60s?

I was reminded of this thread upon being subjected to Some Nights, by fun. Obviously, they're mining the Queen vein, and it seems lucrative. I could only take 4 songs of this. I find Mika, whose schtick is similar, to be far more enjoyable.
