 dB's

First of all, the dB's were frighteningly great at their SXSW showcase. They played about half new material, all of which was at least good and some excellent (at first listen), and half older stuff, ending the main set with a magnificent "Neverland" and getting an encore, something that rarely happens at SX, for "If and When."

I overheard Peter Holsapple tell someone that he felt every one of his 56 years, but it sure didn't seem like it when they hit the stage. I hope young bands were watching, because they got seriously schooled.

Oh, and Mitch Easter was on bass, subbing for Gene Holder.

Secondly, what's the consensus around here on Paris Avenue? The TP entry basically just notes its existence. The Amazon reviews seem to either love or loathe it.

Glad to hear it was a great show. As I said before, I am exceedingly envious that you got to experience it. Maybe they'll do a more extended tour after that new record comes out.

I only picked up Paris Avenue years after the fact and haven't listened to it in a while. I recall it to be pretty good, though not on a par with that early stuff or the just-post-breakup stuff like Stamey and Holsapple's Mavericks. I should pull it out and listen to it again. Hard to imagine anyone loathing it....

It's got some one-star reviews on Amazon from people who profess to be fans. But it has its defenders as well.

I'm a fan but really didn't like this at all. Uninspired throughout.
