R. Stevie Moore is playing a couple of SXSW gigs (officially - no idea if he's doing any of the unofficial shows around town). If everything goes as planned, I'll finally see him play tonight. We've had lots of discussion on this board about his recordings - anybody here seen him on stage?

He played solo, did a couple of funny spoken word pieces as well as played a few songs. I'll admit I was hoping for a band, but considering he was on the same bill as Daniel Johnston and Kimya Dawson (and some dude named Jeffery or Geoffrey Lewis or Louis), his performance fit right in.

I caught about 15 minutes of his speech before the first panel I went to that day. Admittedly, I didn't see it from the beginning, but what everybody else thought was brilliant seemed rambling and incoherent to me. I'd've rather have listened to Little Steven.

One of the more perplexing things about Springsteen is how uncomfortable he seems when speaking outside of the context of a "show"...he comes across as extremely nervous. Springsteen seems to have an aversion to introspection, too.
I watched the speech, and it didn't strike me as anything amazing, although his 3 or 4 minutes on on Eric Burdon and The Animals was pretty good.

Springsteen coverage and/or buzz dominated the festival this year. Kind of gave the rising acts (not that there were many to be buzzed about) short shrift, I think.

That's basically how I felt when I read that he'd be at SXSW at all. "What's Bruce doing there? Shouldn't the conference be left to those who are trying to make it, rather than those who have?"
Of course, I may be way behind the curve on that notion.

I would be interested to hear this Stevie Moore / Ariel Pink collaboration which comes out next month. It's initial release will consist of only 100 cassettes, so not sure if I can secure one or not:
"L.A. weird-pop scene leader Ariel Pink's collaboration with one of his major influences, the lo-fi figurehead R. Stevie Moore, is finally getting an official release. The collection, which bears the exceptionally awful title Ku Klux Glam, has been floating around for awhile. Twenty of its 60 tracks will be released on April 30 as a cassette in an edition of 100 for London "stoner pop" label Stroll On Records. Each tape is numbered and accompanied by a fold-out poster."
