 R.I.P. Ronnie Montrose

To be honest, I don't know much about Montrose or the band named after him except that the band gave the world Sammy Hagar, which doesn't really endear them to me. But people who know better than I manage to think highly of Montrose even if they can't stand Hagar.

He did some nice work on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey album--though I'm not as big a fan of that album as most VM fans.

I couldn't name a single tune from the Hagar-led Montrose. Is it perhaps a case of classic rock radio simply neglecting to inform the listened that the tune they're playing in that "Sammy Hagar Rock Block" was in fact a Montrose tune?

...

It all feels very hoary, mid-70s, I'd-have-been-listening-to-Cheap-Trick to me.

Still. "No man is an island ... yada yada yada."

Wonder if Sammy is lookin' over his shoulder and patiently driving the speed limit?

I've made a point over the years to listen to "Rock Candy" and "Bad Motor Scooter," but I don't think I'd ever heard them before then (or since). I'm to the point now where Hagar could say hello to me and I'd cringe at the sound of his voice, so I can't be objective about anything he's ever been involved in. I'm sure Montrose was a fine guitarist.

On a related note, this new Van Halen record kind of kicks ass!

When I saw it on the new release board at the local mom 'n pop, I made mocking reference to that new VH record. The guy at the counter told me it was "pretty good."

What's the title? "1985?"

It does? It sounded like a bunch of worn-out old men to me. A lot of skill, but no fire.

To me, it sounds like "typical" Roth-era VH (which is not a bad thing), but the quality of the songwriting see-saws a lot. If any of VH's hard-rock contemporaries had released "Tattoo" in the Eighties, it would've been a fair-to-good-sized party-hearty hit for said band. If Eddie, Diamond Dave and the guys had released that song back in those days, it would've been scoffed at for being a weak showing from the mighty Van Halen.

But the title seems off. A Different Kind of Truth? Since when does Van Halen worry about that?

The lady at the deli counter in my cafeteria said she saw Van Halen at the Boston Garden last night and it was really good. She also said Kool and The Gang opened. What a strange double-ticket. BTW, this lunch lady is continually going to Bruins games and concerts. How is this possible when I cannot afford this on an engineers salary? Some people are just more willing to spend a higher percentage of their income on events than I am.

You need to check out stubhub, Nose. I recently got two Celtics tickets for just a tad over 30 bucks. It's all about timing (and choosing games that aren't as desirable). I use the same strategy for Fenway. . .ie, get last-minute tickets to inter-league games in June.

Mostly though, I go to see our local minor league baseball team for 6 dollars a seat. Real Americana, that is.

Man, I go here and see 2500-3000 seats available for each home game. Is it possible that 3000 seats of a 15000 seat arena are being scalped on a single web site?

Yeah, Kool & the Gang will be opening for Van Halen at the Denver show in May, too. That's the weirdest pairing I've heard about in a long time, at least for an arena show. Still, it kinda harks back to the days when promoters would (seemingly) deliberately mix the genres on a bill, to give more variety to the show.

I think it's a great idea honestly. I love unexpected genre mixing like that.

Not so strange considering that fact that Van Halen's "Best of Both Worlds" rips off Kool's "Celebrate" riff. Did the two play together? They coulda done a live mashup...

You are confusing Van Hagar with Van Halen

Depending on the event, it may be a likelihood, rather than a possibility.

I think it's a great idea too. Word is the Van Halen audience is digging the mix - apparently K & the G are playing a really crowd-pleasing, hits-heavy set.

I guess a lot of VH's fans have grown up. Back in the '80s, Van Halen fans and Kool & the Gang fans mixed like oil and water.

Once when I was riding up I-25 with friends, "Best of Both Worlds" came on the car stereo, and the riff that Fab mentioned above struck me. When the rhythm section kicked in, I sang along: "Celebrate, good times, come on!" The way my companions responded, I was lucky I didn't have to walk home. Their attitude was, similarity be damned; this is Van Halen we're talking about. Don't dis Eddie and the guys by comparing them to frickin' Kool & the Gang.
