I think you framed the quote a little bit there, Toland. The actual quote is:
Does he regret that? "Regret is a strong word because it implies that you carry it around, and I wouldn't say I do. I'd hate to seem begrudging of success, but at the same time I'd like to be honest enough to say maybe we shouldn't have cashed in all the chips. It's a bit overwhelming when your band is no longer your own, you become an industry within an industry, but I'm very wary of going 'poor us'. C'mon, it's what you dream of. We wanted to be a great band and take it around the world, that's still what we work for."
"Cashed in all the chips" sounds less mercenary than "cashed in"

Actually, I'm just quoting the Guardian's headline. It's definitely a sensationalist take on what Kerr actually said, but, hell, it got me to read the article. And I don't really care about Simple Minds one way or t'other.

haha. Me neither. But I enjoyed the interview. I tend to forget whether its Simple Minds or Naked Eyes which do "Dont You Forget About Me" or "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me". But I love both those songs. Regardless of what the band members themselves think of it.

It was an interesting piece, and I do dig me some mid-period Simple Minds (up through Sparkle In The Rain. And even "Don't You Forget About Me" is pretty great radio fare.

I picked up the Sparkle In The Rain cd from the library and am listening to it now for the first time in probably 20 years. Bombastic as all get-out, but so far it's holding up better than I might have expected.
Mel Gaynor is a hell of a drummer. That one fill on "Don't You Forget About Me" is some of the best non-Bonham drumming you'll hear on the radio.
