I had thought about putting together a Valentine's Day theme for the show, but realized I'd be a poseur, just pulling any world-music album that included a song or two with "Amor" in the title. I might've ended up playing, say, the Portuguese version of "Love Stinks" or something. (Which might have been cool, now that I think of it.)

Granted, it's a dodgy translation. Something about "the stenches of love."
Yeah, yeah!
...
Does anyone else have a permanent mental image of John Rhys-Davies from the television version of "Shogun" next to their definition of "Portuguese" in their mental dictionary?

"Listen to me, you whore-gutted, pock-marked, motherless scum... I need a favor. "

The stenches of love, Ingles! The stenches of love.

I do have a permanent mental image of that actor, but it has nothing to do with any particular movie (let alone being Portuguese). He actually pulled up in a rental car in front of my house, while I was mowing the front lawn, and asked for directions. He was appearing at a film festival in Denver, and was visiting friends in the area, but got lost on the way to their house.

No, thank God. My visual reference for "Portuguese" is actually Nelly Furtado, and as badly as her musical credibility tanked with "Promiscuous," I'd still rather have her cluttering up space in my mental galleries than ol' Gimli.

Though I am envious of Delvin being asked for directions by Rhys-Davies. That guy is badass.

Delvin,
Have you checked out the Brownswood Bubblers series? Really, really good compilations of underground music--much of it "world" music. If you haven't, you can sample all of them on iTunes. I've got a couple of them on heavy shuffle rotation on my iPod.

Erik: Thank you for the recommendation. Will check it out!
Reno: Thank you for the refresh to my mental Rolodex, under "Portuguese."
BTW, Mr. Rhys-Davies was a pleasant fellow in person; we had a nice chat for about five minutes. (And I succeeded in giving him worthwhile directions.)

I like to think that at some point you were able to work in - in your best Ian McKellan voice - "I would not go through the mines...."

No, this was long before he appeared in the Lord of the Rings films. (Actually, he was impressed that I remembered his name, instead of just calling him "that guy from Raiders.")

You didn't offer him any of those delicious dates that made Colorado famous, did you?
I would've asked him to sign my Sliders box set.
