This is Mr Fab the legal assistant speaking: yes, the Stones could sue over the "Sticky Fingers" cover. And the Beatles could sue Klaus Voorman over the "revolver" cover, etc etc. The album cover is considered to be part of the album, hence the artist's property.Reed and Cale have never had a beef with Warhol -heck, they did a Whole tribute album dedicated to him. Its the Warhol people they are beefin' with, using property that the Velvets split with Andy 50/50 without consulting the Velvets.

The 1st VU album is probably the 1st album to generate lawsuits for both its front & back covers (Eric Emerson sued because his image was on the back, which forced Verve to change it).

How about:

Jane's Addiction: "Ritual de lo Habitual"
Coup: "Party Music"
Type O Negative: "The Origin"
Scorpions: "Virgin Killer
The Five Keys: "On Stage!" (funny story there)
The Residents: "The Third Reich & Roll" (censored for Germany)
Birth Control: "Operation"
Ministry: "Dark Side Of The Spoon"
The Black Crowes: "Amorica"
The Strokes: "Is This It"
Guns N Roses: "Appetite for Destruction"
Poison: "Open Up And Say… Ahh"
David Bowie: "Diamond Dogs"
Roxy Music: "Country Life" (sadly!)
The Beautiful South: "Welcome To The Beautiful South"

Wow, the author of that article just couldn't resist a nasty dig at Nico at the end. Real classy.

What would you expect from the author of "She's Lost Control"...?

Hint: She goes by the nickname "SemtexGirl" on Blippy.com

It wasn't withdrawn and replaced, but of course the Blind Faith album had an "alternative" cover for the U.S. (though the original cover was released in the U.S. as well, from what I understand).

Yawn. It's inexcusably avant-derrière to point it out, but ...

"You should have seen the cover they wanted to do! It wasn't a glove, believe me."

Great White: the one with the woman on the anchor (some covers show her in the water with her head above water and her body underwater).

Blatz/Tribe 8 split 7"

Welcome to the Beautiful South? I've only ever seen one cover, the one with the two folks, one of whom has a gun in her mouth. Did someone object?

Ah, I see from Wikipedia that Woolworth's refused to stock the album because of the cover, so an alternate cover was provided. Woolworth's still sold records then?

Lynyrd Skynrd - The Street Survivors flame cover was released a couple of days after the crash. It was replaced with the same cover sans flames.

Roxy Music - Country Life - removed the 2 models and left the shrubs as the cover. When the album first came out it was wrapped in black shrink wrap.

Don't forget about the most famous one - The Beatles butcher cover
