 R.I.P. Jimmy Castor

Every time I hear "Troglodyte" I'm still amazed by the fact that it was a huge hit when I was in grade school. It sounds like a funky version of "The Gift" by the Velvet Underground. What the hell ever happened to commercial radio? That song single-handedly shreds the myth that popular music was worthless in the pre-punk 70s.

Man, that's a sad loss. "Troglodyte" and "It's Just Begun" often have been go-to songs for me, whenever I've felt like adding some funk/soul/R&B to my radio shows. (And 64 is pretty young.)

I was just checking out the BET article when a co-worker came into my cubicle and saw that Castor had died. He was instantly bummed. He (my co-worker) told me he had played sax in high school, and back then, they played a lot of Jimmy Castor's music.

"Let's take the average cave-man at home...listening to his stereo."

"Her name was Bertha...Bertha Butt...one of the Butt sisters."

Damn, I love "Troglodyte." Almost as good: "King King, "Bertha Butt Boogie," "Say Leroy, Your Mama's Calling." And, if for no other reason then their titles, you gotta love "Bertha Butt Encounters Vader" and "The Creature from the Black Lagoon Is Your Father." Who's making funk this silly nowadays?

Hell yeah! Reminds me of when a co-worker picked up a James Brown CD cover on my desk. He started reading the titles out loud, in a deep manly voice: "Sex Machine," "Doin' It to Death," "Super-Bad," "It's a Man's World," and so on. He put it down and said, "Damn, I don't even need to hear the music! Just readin' the songs has been a big boost to my day."
