 "The Hidden Music"
Author: Delvin
Date:   01-09-12 09:26

This Thursday night, I'll be doing a show on KRCC that consists of nothing but hidden and unlisted tracks. From "Train in Vain" to "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues," from "Ole Black 'n Blue Eyes" to "Endless Nameless," they'll all be brought to the light. (Well, maybe not that last one; it's also pretty formless and tuneless, so I'll probably skip it.)

The show starts at 11:00 PM Mountain Time on the 12th. If you're interested (and awake), you can stream it online at KRCC.org.

That's a cool idea. I've always been kind of partial to the unnamed song at the end of REM's Green that Bill Berry thought was so stupid he refused to play on it so it's Peter Buck on drums.

Was that the beginning of the end for Berry as a member of the band? Barring that, it might count as the debut of R.E.M. as a trio. Not that it matters. Really.

A friend of mine (not the one who's normally confused by such things, but a different one) was once convinced that her house was haunted because she was listening to a CD while cleaning one day and didn't get around to changing it after it ended, and then twenty minutes later "Oh my GAWD, it just started playing some random song!!!! It was freaky! I think it was possessed."

I should have played along, but instead I was a nice guy and explained hidden tracks to her.

Both Songs in the Key of X: Music from and Inspired by the X-Files and John Cale's Hobosapiens have tracks hidden before the beginning of the album.

You have to begin Track )1 and then hold down the rewind button to find them.

Here are a few other CDs that include "pre-gap" tracks, at least on some versions:

311 - Transistor
The Adverts - Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts
Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock & Roll
Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty
Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
Better Than Ezra - Friction, Baby
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Take Them On, On Your Own
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Blur - Think Tank
The Boo Radleys - Kingsize
British Sea Power - Open Season
Hoodoo Gurus - Blue Cave
Adrian Legg - Waiting For A Dancer
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (disc 2)
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
R.E.M. - Murmur, Deluxe Edition (bonus disc)
R.E.M. - Reckoning, Deluxe Edition (bonus disc)
Super Furry Animals - Guerrilla
Super Furry Animals - Out Spaced
They Might Be Giants - Factory Showroom
XTC - Coat of Many Cupboards (pre-gap tracks on disc 2 and on disc 3)

As it turned out, though, the CD players in the on-air studio don't work for accessing those tracks. So I'd have to record them to Mini-Disc first in the production studio. (I might just do that, because I think I have enough material available for a sequel to last night's show.)

Take that last post as a hint: If you know any good hidden tracks, let me know. Thanks!

I know that "Carbona Not Glue" was "hidden" between tracks on the Ramones' "Loco Live" (at least I think that was the live CD).

There's a new version of "Shesmovedon" hidden at the end of the Porcupine Tree album Deadwing. Personally I don't think it's as good as the original on Lightbulb Sun, but the band disagrees with me.

The Laetitia Sadier version of Bonnie & Clyde, at the end of Luna's Penthouse, is unlisted.
