 Most undesirable band name?
Author: Delvin
Date:   02-09-11 12:54

I'm confident this topic has been covered on the board, but Nosepail's mention of the group Wussy makes me want to re-visit it.

Let me qualify it (just a little) and ask: What band name (that's been used) would you rather leave the band, rather than accede to?

If my bandmates wanted to call our group Wussy, I think I'd quit. (Which makes me sound kind of wussy, I guess.)

As much as I dearly love the band and the music, I would never, in a million years, stay in a band called The Queers (not out of homophobia, but out of fear of offending a whole lot of people or having to answer the question, "what's the name of your band?").

But Nose was right: Ass Ponys takes the cake. For that matter, I would not want to be in a band called Cake. For that additional matter, I would not want to be in a band called The Band. If I were in a band called The Band, I would rename it something cooler and sleeker and more modern, like (oh, I don't know) Wilco.

One of my ex-students tags a young relative in her Facebook photos as "my nephew and godson Ethan James." I think that's a good band name.

When bad names happen to good bands?

Come spurts readily out as a primo example of a truly ill-considered band name. Which is a damned shame, because eleven:eleven is a dour, goosebump-raising masterpiece. I love that CD. Really I do.

On the other hand, I can recall having a semi-friend play some tunes by a band called Snot and thinking "Well, at least that awful name is put to good use here."

Can we see a pattern emerging here? Band names that reference bodily fluids are RIGHT OUT in my book. Please note that the Butthole Surfers are technically exempt from this rule, as their name only references a body part.

...

Lubricated Goat was a pretty awful name as well. Based solely on the name, I'd rather be in GWAR. That's saying a lot.

.
.
.

... and "Beatles?" WTF? Maybe that's why all the girls were screaming? Bugs?

Good points by Kay. . . and while I was reading the opening lines, I was reminded of my least favorite band name of all time: Pearl Jam.

Yeah, like ... The Pop Group.

Have to agree with Erik, on a band name that upsets or offends more people than it's worth. John Speck had a lot of problems with his band getting stuck with the name The Fags. I've had more than one friend ask, "So are these guys actually gay, or is it just a rude band name?"

Interesting that the name Wussy bugs me so much ... because the name Ninety Pound Wuss is hilarious, IMO.

Aw, come on guys: The Queers is a perfectly fine punk rock band name. Dont be so PC. The Fags is a little harsher on the ear, for sure, but what a fabulous band!

If you want offensive: The original band name for Dinosaur Jr was "All White Jury". Funny. But offensive, for sure.

Great bands, for sure.

Interestingly, I have no problem with the 1960s Jamaican rocksteady band the Gay Lads, both because of my unbridled love of the genre and because it really was not meant in a way that would offend. . .

Body parts/sexual orientation don't bug me the way just really DUMB names do, e.g.:

Hootie and the Blowfish
Does It Offend You, Yeah?
Sleigh Bells

and, tho they don't really bother me, I cannot imagine going thru life with a name like I Am the World trade Center, or Godspeed You Black Emperor.

To me, it's not a question of being PC. It's a question of having to waste my time explaining to people why my band has the name it has.

We haven't even touched on the death/black metal genre that has some truly awful, offensive names that I won't bother to list.

I remember my conservative father coming across the name the Butthole Surfers in the reviews section of the magazine I wrote for in the 90s and thinking it was a very silly and hilarious name. Which would probably have made Gibby and Leary proud.

I've mentioned this before: I used to have a co-worker (well, at the same company, though not on the same projects) named Albino Negro. Personally, I think The Albino Negroes would be a hilarious band name ... though it sure wouldn't be PC.

I read one review that said Whitesnake is a superb heavy-metal band name, because it's racist and sexist at the same time.

While I don't care for their music, Does It Offend You, Yeah takes their name from a David Brent (Ricky Gervais) quote from The Office. So on the rare occasion that band comes up, I can just hear David Brent: "'Does it offend you, yeah? My drinking?"

And I smile appreciatively.

It's still a terrible name, yeah?

They were filed in the 'Spanish' section of the L.A. Central Library. Those mariachi fans must have been surprised.

I know someone who thought that YoYo Ma was a rapper.

The name 10,000 Maniacs certainly didn't fit the music, at least after the first album.

Weird names for punk/hardcore bands: Painted Willy, Gorilla Biscuits, 100 Flowers (ok, they were a little on the artsy side), Mucky Pup, Embrace...

Nashville Pussy (the band) took its name from a Ted Nugent stage rap on one of his live albums. Having seen that band a couple times, I can say that its live act measures up to the Nuge's reputation, at least. NP was an especially entertaining live act in the early days, when Corey Parks was in the band. A blonde biker-ish female bassist who's six-foot-three, and who breathes fire onstage? How can you miss with that?

I saw NP a couple of times with Corey (the first time opening for Motorhead) - the fire breathing thing was usually preceded by some chick-on-chick action (just kissing, pervs) between her and guitarist Ruyter Suys. They definitely knew how to hold the crowd's attention. (What is Corey Parks doing these days, anyway?)

Strangely enough, though, the best I ever saw them was a tour without Corey. They eschewed all the gimmicks and just played like it was their last gig - it was pretty awesome.

I've seen them since (again, opening for Motorhead, but in a much bigger venue than the first time) and they weren't nearly as good. Then again, their last couple of records have been kind of by-the-numbers, so maybe it's a lack of compelling material.

Cherokee Parks--there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Going a bit further back (regarding Duke), my HS team scrimmaged against a team that Greg Koubek played for. He was a sixth man for those great Duke teams from the late 1980s into the early 1990s, and I think he still holds the record for appearing in a final four every year of his college career. The massive ass-whooping he would put on us feels better in retrospect.

I think "Yazoo" is a tribute to either the town (Yazoo City) in Mississippi or the record label named after the town in Mississippi. Were either of these touchstones for Clark & Moyet? I don't know.
