HUSKY RESCUE (Buy CDs by this artist) Sleep Tight Tiger EP (UK Catskills) 2004 Summertime Cowboy EP (UK Catskills) 2004 Country Falls (Minty Fresh) 2005 Finland’s Husky Rescue resides comfortably alongside the likes of the Cardigans, Goldfrapp, Portishead and Violet Indiana: tastefully atmospheric down-tempo pop with a female singer. Reeta-Leena Korhola has a pleasant voice but so far lacks the personality of Nina Persson or Alison Goldfrapp, while the band led by songwriter/bassist Marko Nyberg creates moody, reasonably catchy backing music that likewise fails to distinguish the band from its influences or more distinctive up-and-comers like the Concretes. Country Falls compiles most of the tracks from prior EPs and singles, peaking with “Summertime Cowboy,” which combines girlie vocals and a perky riff lifted from Duran Duran’s "Save a Prayer." The album showcases a young band with plenty of talent and some pretty good songs, but for the moment missing that special something. A bonus DVD offers videos for "New Light of Tomorrow," "Summertime Cowboy” and "City Lights." [Brad Reno] |
